She was 79.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Frank Valentini, the executive producer of \u201cGeneral Hospital,\u201d confirmed her death <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/valentinifrank\/status\/1878584348846469211\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a> on social media on Sunday. Ms. Charleson died of complications from a long illness, according to<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>Marianne Price, a spokeswoman for the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Valentini said that just as her character, Dr. Monica Quartermaine, was the heart of the Quartermaine family on the show, the actress was the \u201cmatriarch of the entire cast and crew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Charleson joined the cast in 1977 as a cardiologist at the hospital where much of the show is set. Since 1963, the series has followed the lives of hospital staff members and residents in the fictional town of Port Charles, N.Y.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Charleson, who appeared in more than 2,000 episodes, began endearing fans after her character married into the wealthy and volatile Quartermaine family as the wife of Dr. Alan Quartermaine, who was played by Stuart Damon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For decades, story lines revolved around their turbulent marriage, which involved fights, affairs, breakups and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/paisoaps\/status\/1878598808164261985\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">even murder attempts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019d do real slaps,\u201d Ms. Charleson <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/leslie-charleson-dead-general-hospital-actress-8605210\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told People magazine in 2023<\/a> for the show\u2019s 60th anniversary. \u201cI would fake a slap in dress rehearsal, but when we went to tape it, all that went out the window!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was nominated four times for a Daytime Emmy Award as outstanding lead actress in a drama series. She also played the character on the show\u2019s spinoff series \u201cPort Charles,\u201d which ran from 1997 to 2003.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Leslie Ann Charleson was born on Feb. 22, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her earliest television acting role was on the former ABC soap opera \u201cA Flame in the Wind\u201d in 1964. She was later part of the cast of the CBS daytime series \u201cLove Is a Many Splendored Thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She also had parts on popular 1970s shows that included \u201cThe Streets of San Francisco,\u201d \u201cHappy Days\u201d and \u201cThe Rockford Files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But she became best known among television viewers for her work on \u201cGeneral Hospital\u201d where she was a daytime mainstay. In a 1981 interview with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soapoperadigest.com\/content\/tbt-leslie-charleson-3\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soap Opera Digest<\/a>, Ms. Charleson described her character as \u201cdedicated in all areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She added: \u201cHer dedication in her social life can be a bit over the top, but it\u2019s true. When she loves, it\u2019s passionately.
