Now, about 100 hostages, living and dead, are still being held in the enclave, officials say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/15\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-ceasefire-israel-hamas.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cease-fire deal<\/a> announced on Wednesday between Israel and Hamas would begin with an initial phase lasting six weeks, and involve the release of 33 hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The deal still has to be formally ratified by Israel\u2019s cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s a closer look at the hostage situation in Gaza.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7226a4a\">How many hostages have already been released?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Early in the war, Hamas released four hostages \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/20\/world\/middleeast\/hamas-hostages-released.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">two Israeli-American women<\/a>, Judith Raanan, then 59, and her daughter, Natalie Raanan, then 17, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/10\/24\/world\/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news\/hamas-hostage-release?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">two Israeli women<\/a>, Nurit Cooper, then 79, and Yocheved Lifshitz, then 85, citing humanitarian reasons. More than 100 hostages were freed in November 2023 during <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/24\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hamas-hostage-deal.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a staggered truce<\/a> between Israel and Hamas. In exchange, about 240 Palestinians held in Israel were released.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-b8b4386\">How many hostages have been rescued?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eight hostages have been freed in Israeli military operations, including one in the first month of the war, when the military <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/30\/world\/middleeast\/israel-rescue-soldier-abducted-hamas.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">rescued one soldier<\/a>, Pvt. Ori Megidish, then 19, who had been abducted from her base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In February 2024, a military operation in the southern Gazan city of Rafah <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/11\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-hostages-rescued.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">freed two hostages<\/a>: Fernando Simon Marman, then 60, and Louis Har, then 70.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In June, the Israeli military freed four people kidnapped from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/15\/world\/middleeast\/israel-music-festival-massacre.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the Nova music festival<\/a> on Oct. 7, 2023: Noa Argamani, then 26; Almog Meir Jan, then 22; Andrey Kozlov, then 27; and Shlomi Ziv, then 41. Ms. Argamani\u2019s case <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/08\/world\/middleeast\/who-are-the-four-hostages-rescued-in-gaza.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">received outsize attention<\/a> after viral footage showed her being taken into Gaza on the back of a motorcycle as she cried out in desperation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">About 100 Palestinians were killed during the operation, according to the Israeli authorities, but officials in Gaza put <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/07\/16\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostage-rescue-nuseirat.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the death toll at more than 270<\/a>, including 64 children. (Neither toll distinguished between civilians and combatants.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In August, the Israeli military <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/27\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostage-rescue-gaza.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">rescued<\/a> Farhan al-Qadi, then 52, a member of Israel\u2019s Bedouin Arab minority, in an operation that killed at least 20 Gazans, local authorities said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-52c8188f\">How many hostages have died?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Of the 250 hostages, about three dozen were presumed dead early in the war, according to the Israeli authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some of their bodies have since been found in Gaza and repatriated, while other captives initially believed to be alive were subsequently declared killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The discoveries have raised questions about the extent to which intense Israeli military operations targeting Hamas have also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/27\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostage-rescue-gaza.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">endangered the captives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Israeli military has killed several hostages in error. In December 2023, the military said its soldiers had mistakenly shot and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/12\/15\/world\/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news\/israel-says-its-troops-killed-three-israeli-hostages-in-a-case-of-mistaken-identity?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">killed three hostages<\/a> who fled their captors in Gaza: Yotam Haim, 28, and Alon Shamriz, 26, who were taken from Kibbutz Kfar Aza; and Samer Talalka, 24, who was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Am while at work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last July, Israel\u2019s military <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/25\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostages-bodies-gaza-idf.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">retrieved the bodies<\/a> of five hostages \u2014 two soldiers and three civilians, ages 20 to 56. They were found in a tunnel shaft in southern Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israeli officials said the captives were killed during the October 2023 attack and their bodies taken as bargaining chips. The next month, Israeli forces said they had recovered the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/20\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostage-bodies-recovered-gaza.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">bodies of six hostages<\/a> in a Gaza tunnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In September, the Israeli military recovered the bodies of another six hostages, ages 23 to 40, who it said had been killed in captivity. Among them was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/01\/world\/middleeast\/hostages-gaza-what-to-know.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American<\/a> whose parents spoke at the Democratic National Convention in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In March, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/12\/world\/middleeast\/us-israeli-citizen-itay-chen-killed.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the family of Itay Chen<\/a> \u2014 a 19-year-old American born in Israel who was serving in the Israeli military \u2014 said it had learned he was killed on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In December, the family of Omer Neutra, 21, an Israeli-American serving in the Israeli military, said it had learned he, too, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/il.usembassy.gov\/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-omer-neutra\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was killed<\/a> that October. His parents spoke at the Republican National Convention in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This month, the Israeli military <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/10\/world\/middleeast\/israeli-hostage-declared-dead-gaza.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a> Youssef and Hamza Ziyadne were dead. Youssef Ziyadne, 53, was taken hostage from a kibbutz with three of his children, including his 23-year-old son Hamza and two teenagers, Bilal and Aisha, who were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/30\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostages-released-thursday.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">freed<\/a> during the truce in November 2023. The family is part of Israel\u2019s Bedouin Arab minority.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1632ea42\">How many hostages are Americans?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, in a speech on Tuesday, said seven Americans were still being held captive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Edan Alexander and Sagui Dekel-Chen were believed to be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.org\/news\/meet-the-seven-american-hostages-still-held-by-hamas\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alive as of December,<\/a> according to the American Jewish Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A few of the remaining five were declared dead early in the war.
