If that happens, the cease-fire and hostage-release agreement could go into effect as soon as Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/17\/world\/israel-hamas-gaza-ceasefire\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">Follow our live coverage here<\/em><\/a><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4be6c26a\">What\u2019s in the agreement?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The cease-fire deal would begin with an initial phase lasting six weeks. It would involve the release of 33 hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and allow the entry into Gaza of 600 trucks carrying humanitarian relief daily, according to a copy of the agreement obtained by The New York Times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the beginning of the first phase, Israel would have to move its forces east, and on the seventh day, Palestinians displaced in southern Gaza could begin to return to the northern part of the territory, according to the document.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in southern Gaza have been living in tents, makeshift shelters, rented homes and relatives\u2019 apartments for more than a year. Many of those planning to return to the north will most likely find that their homes and neighborhoods have been destroyed, especially residents of the town of Jabaliya.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The provisional deal says a minimum of 60,000 temporary homes and 200,000 tents would be brought into Gaza during the initial phase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By the 16th day of the first phase, negotiations about the second phase of the deal would begin, especially details related to the further exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners. The second phase would also last six weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/15\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-ceasefire-israel-hamas.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Read more on the terms here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-a238a64\">Who will be freed?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If it goes into effect, the cease-fire would allow for the release of hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel. About 100 hostages are thought to still be in Gaza, although the Israeli authorities believe around 35 of them are dead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The 33 hostages to be released in the first phase include women and children, men over 50 and sick or wounded people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The agreement requires Hamas to release three female hostages on Day 1, four more on Day 7, and 26 more over the next five weeks. In exchange, Israel must free multiple Palestinian prisoners for each hostage, including some serving life sentences in some cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/15\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hostages-gaza-hamas.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Read more about the hostage and prisoners here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5376319b\">What\u2019s the status of the deal?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The full cabinet was expected to meet later in the day to green-light the deal. If it does so, it could go into effect as soon as Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some hard-line members of Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s government have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/15\/world\/middleeast\/ceasefire-netanyahu-israel.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">opposed the deal<\/a>, threatening the viability of his coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Thursday, Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel\u2019s far-right minister for national security, announced that his party would resign from Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s coalition should the cabinet approve the cease-fire deal. The move threatens to destabilize the government at a critical time but should not, in and of itself, prevent the Gaza deal from moving ahead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Critics of Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s government, including many of the families of hostages held in Gaza, have repeatedly accused the prime minister of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/15\/world\/middleeast\/ceasefire-netanyahu-israel.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">sabotaging past efforts to reach a deal<\/a> to preserve his coalition \u2014 the most right-wing and religiously conservative in Israel\u2019s history \u2014 and remain in power.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-33fd3d19\">Has fighting continued?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Deadly Israeli strikes in Gaza have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/16\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-strikes-ceasefire.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">continued<\/a>. The Palestinian Civil Defense, an emergency service organization, said Friday that Israeli strikes had killed at least 101 people since the cease-fire deal was announced. The claims could not be independently verified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Israeli military said on Thursday that it had struck about 50 targets across the Gaza Strip over the past day. The targets included militants from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, their compounds, weapons storage and manufacturing sites and launch and observation posts.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3ffc2bfb\">Why did talks move forward?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The talks gained momentum after Israel reached <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/27\/world\/middleeast\/israel-lebanon-ceasefire.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a separate cease-fire agreement<\/a> with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which began firing rockets into Israel immediately after the Hamas-led attack of October 2023. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/29\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hezbollah-nasrallah-assassination-intelligence.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Battered badly<\/a> by its escalating conflict with Israel, Hezbollah agreed to a cease-fire with Israel in November, a deal that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/28\/us\/politics\/hamas-hezbollah-israel.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">helped isolate Hamas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some officials have suggested that the change in U.S. administrations, set to take place on Monday, put pressure on Israel and Hamas to accelerate their decision-making after months of delay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">President-elect Donald J. Trump, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-hostages-hamas.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">warned<\/a> that there would be \u201call hell to pay\u201d unless the hostages were freed by the time he took office.
