{"id":41686,"date":"2025-01-22T15:18:20","date_gmt":"2025-01-22T20:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/an-ancient-headless-statue-is-found-amid-trash-in-greece\/22\/01\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-01-22T15:18:20","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T20:18:20","slug":"an-ancient-headless-statue-is-found-amid-trash-in-greece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/an-ancient-headless-statue-is-found-amid-trash-in-greece\/22\/01\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"An Ancient Headless Statue Is Found Amid Trash in Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On the evening of Jan. 18, a 32-year old Greek man went to the police with an unusual object that he said he had found in a plastic bag among trash bins near the northern city of Thessaloniki.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was a headless, armless statue depicting a female form in a flowing, draped garment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The police <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astynomia.gr\/2025\/01\/22\/22-01-2025-agalma-ton-ellinistikon-chronon-anevrethike-se-periochi-tis-thessalonikis\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced on Wednesday<\/a> that the statue was believed to date from the Hellenistic period, after the death of Alexander the Great, from 323 B.C. to about 31 B.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The find has prompted an investigation among Greek crime, trafficking, antiquities and heritage protection units into its origins and how it could have wound up in the garbage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The discovery of ancient artifacts in surprising places is not uncommon in a country as rich in history and archaeology as Greece. Relics are often unearthed during construction projects, such as those to prepare for the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/06\/18\/sports\/sports-of-the-times-building-for-the-future-unearthing-ancient-past.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2004 Olympics<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/05\/13\/world\/athens-journal-new-subway-lays-bare-greece-in-all-its-glory.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">subway system excavations.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is not the first time\u201d civilians have handed over statues to police stations, said Vasilis Tempelis, a culture ministry spokesman, in an email on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Ministry of Culture has completed a preliminary examination of the statue and concluded that it falls under Greek laws protecting antiquities, the police said. A three-person panel will try to to determine its composition and dating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/greece-ancient-statue-thessaloniki-ac751946c43686edc4fe6358aed10a5d\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The A.P. said<\/a> the statue stands about 31 inches high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classics.ox.ac.uk\/people\/professor-bert-smith\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Bert Smith<\/a>, a professor of classical archaeology at the universities of Oxford University and Bilkent University in Turkey, said that the statue appeared to be a small-scale figure of a goddess.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe small size is typical for such marble votives set up to divinities in sanctuaries or temples,\u201d he said in an email, basing his observations on official photographs of the statue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPeople prayed to divinities and made dedications to them in thanks for their favor,\u201d Dr. Smith said. \u201cSmall statue figures, like this one, would be the expensive dedication of a private person.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The figure\u2019s clothing, depicting a heavy wool one-piece garment, is called a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/peplos\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">peplos<\/a><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>by archaeologists, and was the common garb of divinities. But the statue\u2019s arms and head were lost to the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe arms might tell us what the figure was doing and what attributes it may have carried,\u201d he said.
