While campaigning last year, he said he would use a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/15\/us\/politics\/trump-tariffs-economy-economy-club-chicago.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">mix of tax cuts and tariffs<\/a> to force companies to invest in the United States. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/21\/technology\/trump-openai-stargate-artificial-intelligence.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">announced Stargate<\/a>, a joint venture between OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle that is intended to create at least $100 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The initiative could invest as much as $500 billion over four years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Saudi Arabia was Mr. Trump\u2019s first stop on his first overseas trip as president in 2017, a reflection of the importance he put on his relationship with the crown prince. During that term, the United States pursued major deals with the kingdom, including arms sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since then, Mr. Trump and his family have signed several personal business deals in the Gulf region, especially in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Trump organization announced several projects in Saudi Arabia in December and also unveiled a $533 million Trump Tower in Jeddah with Dar Global, the global arm of Saudi Arabia\u2019s Dar Al Arkan real estate company. Both Dar Al Arkan and its Dar Global subsidiary are private companies, but they have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-hussain-sajwani-damac-crypto-deals.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">close ties<\/a> to the Saudi government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump\u2019s son-in-law, also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/10\/us\/jared-kushner-saudi-investment-fund.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">secured a $2 billion investment<\/a> from a Saudi government fund for his private equity firm six months after Mr. Trump left the White House in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOne thing is certain, Trump and M.B.S. are both fluent in the language of business,\u201d said Salman al-Ansari, a geopolitical analyst from Saudi Arabia, using a widespread <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/21\/world\/middleeast\/mohammed-bin-salman-saudi-arabia.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">abbreviation of the crown prince\u2019s name<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/si19rPJi5NQ?t=1137\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told reporters<\/a> in the Oval Office on Monday that Saudi Arabia was his first foreign stop during his previous term because \u201cthey agreed to buy $450 billion worth of our product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If Saudi Arabia wanted to \u201cbuy another 450 or 500,\u201d he said, \u201cI think I\u2019d probably go there,\u201d for his first overseas trip in his second term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the spring, before his election, Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/03\/us\/politics\/trump-mohammed-bin-salman.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">spoke with the crown prince<\/a>. It was unclear what they discussed and whether this was the only conversation they had since Mr. Trump left office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During the campaign, Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w8jp-38TSVI\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> Al Arabiya, a Saudi-owned broadcaster, that he had \u201cso much respect for Mohammed, who is doing so great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump stood by the crown prince in the aftermath of the killing of the Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, despite the C.I.A.\u2019s assessment that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/26\/us\/politics\/jamal-khashoggi-killing-cia-report.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the crown prince had likely approved the killing and dismemberment<\/a> of Mr. Khashoggi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also spoken with the Saudi crown prince, in a phone call during which they discussed the \u201cstrength of the U.S.-Saudi partnership in this time of momentous change,\u201d according to a State Department readout. In 2018, while he was a senator, Mr. Rubio said there was \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/12\/05\/politics\/marco-rubio-khashoggi-murder-mohammed-bin-salman-cnntv\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no doubt<\/a>\u201d the Saudi crown prince was involved in the Khashoggi murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Another focus of the Trump administration is persuading Saudi Arabia to join the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/13\/us\/politics\/trump-israel-united-arab-emirates-uae.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Abraham Accords<\/a>, an agreement brokered during Mr. Trump\u2019s first term that resulted in several Arab nations establishing formal diplomatic relations with Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a readout released early Thursday morning by the Saudi press agency, the Saudis said Mr. Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed had also discussed \u201cways to promote peace, security, and stability in the Middle East,\u201d though the statement did not mention any discussions on a potential expansion of those accords.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the Oval Office on Monday, Mr. Trump also discussed those agreements. He told reporters: \u201cI don\u2019t think you have to push them. I think it\u2019s going to happen, but maybe not quite yet.
