Invited by the host and \u201cRapture\u201d hitmaker Debbie Harry of Blondie, the Funky 4 + 1 <\/strong>became the first hip-hop group to perform on national network TV, rapping their giddy funk bomb \u201cThat\u2019s the Joint.\u201d<\/p>\n Oct. 3, 1981<\/p>\n Rod Stewart brought out a surprise guest, Tina Turner, to duet on a high-octane, kick-filled \u201cHot Legs,\u201d an early step in her fabled comeback.<\/p>\n Oct. 31, 1981<\/p>\n At the behest of John Belushi, \u201cS.N.L.\u201d booked the caustic California hardcore provocateurs Fear. A gaggle of rambunctious punks \u2014 including members of Minor Threat and Cro-Mags \u2014 turned 30 Rock into their personal CBGB, slam-dancing, stage-diving, screaming a four-letter word into the microphone and essentially introducing the concept of \u201cmoshing\u201d to middle America. \u201cThe real audience at \u2018Saturday Night Live\u2019 was scared to death,\u201d remembered<\/a> the frontman Lee Ving.<\/p>\n Sept. 25, 1982<\/p>\n Even though the Queen frontman Freddie Mercury had strained his Earth-shattering voice earlier that day, the band managed to churn through naturally triumphant versions of \u201cUnder Pressure\u201d and \u201cCrazy Little Thing Called Love.\u201d The band retired from touring and Mercury died in 1991, making this the classic quartet\u2019s final performance in America.<\/p>\n Jan. 18, 1986<\/p>\n The Minneapolis college rock icons the Replacements got drunk, secretly cranked their amps, played sloppily, swore and \u2014 in the case of the bassist Bob Stinson \u2014 mooned the crowd. \u201cRock \u2019n\u2019 roll doesn\u2019t always make for great television,\u201d the frontman Paul Westerberg said in the band biography<\/a> \u201cTrouble Boys.\u201d \u201cBut we were trying to do whatever possible to make sure that was a memorable evening.\u201d<\/p>\n March 22, 1986<\/p>\n During his tenure with CBS Records, the Minimalist composer Philip Glass had a brief crossover moment into the pop consciousness with albums of short, glistening pieces like \u201cGlassworks\u201d and \u201cSongs From Liquid Days.\u201d He became the only contemporary classical composer to serve as musical guest.<\/p>\n Sept. 30, 1989<\/p>\n After a turbulent decade experimenting with rockabilly, electro-pop, country, synth-rock and blues, Neil Young rejuvenated his career with a muscular, explosive performance of \u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World\u201d from his upcoming 19th album, \u201cFreedom.\u201d<\/p>\n
