Israel said that Hamas had violated the terms of their truce. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/26\/world\/lebanon-israel-hezbollah#lebanon-israel-hezbollah\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Follow our coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israeli forces opened fire on Sunday as thousands of Lebanese displaced by the war poured onto roads leading to their homes. The military said in a statement that a vehicle with flags of the militant group Hezbollah had approached their troops, prompting them to \u201cremove the threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Israeli military also said troops had identified dozens of rioters and fired warning shots to disperse them. Lebanon\u2019s Health Ministry said that more than 120 people were injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">More people are expected to try to return to their homes today, prompting fears of further violence. Israel has remained in the country past a 60-day deadline for both Israel and Hezbollah to withdraw amid Israeli concerns that Hezbollah remained active there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite the fragility of the truces, the warring sides appeared to want the cease-fires to hold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Lebanon cease-fire: <\/strong>The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/27\/world\/middleeast\/israel-lebanon-ceasefire.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">agreement<\/a>, which was signed in November, stipulated that Israel and Hezbollah withdraw from southern Lebanon, and that the Lebanese Army and U.N. peacekeepers be deployed in force to secure the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Gaza: <\/strong>Israel was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/26\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-cease-fire.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">preventing Palestinians<\/a> from returning to their homes, saying that Hamas had violated the cease-fire. Under its terms, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/26\/world\/lebanon-israel-hezbollah\/who-is-arbel-yehud-the-israeli-hostage-at-the-center-of-the-dispute?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Arbel Yehud, the last female civilian hostage that Israel believes is most likely alive<\/a>, should have been released. He is the first president in South Korean history to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/26\/world\/asia\/south-korea-yoon-indicted-martial-law.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">face criminal charges while still in office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A trial for Yoon, who was impeached in December, will most likely begin soon. A former defense minister and several military generals and police chiefs were also recently indicted, and all face criminal charges of helping Yoon commit the same crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The country\u2019s Constitutional Court is deliberating whether the parliamentary impeachment was legitimate and if Yoon should be formally removed from office.
