Thousands of Lebanese displaced by the war have poured onto roads leading south as they aim to return home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">The latest: <\/strong>Displaced Gazans in the enclave\u2019s south <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/27\/world\/israel-hamas-lebanon-gaza\/fb76f948-5eaf-5e4d-b63c-83e8bee059d4?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">can start returning on foot<\/a> to their homes in the north starting at 7 a.m. local time this morning, followed by vehicles via a different route two hours later, according to an Israeli military spokesman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Diplomacy: <\/strong>President Trump has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/26\/world\/middleeast\/trump-gaza-jordan-egypt.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">pushed to \u201cclean out\u201d the Gaza Strip<\/a>, including by asking Egypt and Jordan to take in hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. Trump had threatened to impose steep tariffs and a raft of other penalties in response to Petro\u2019s announcement that he had turned back military planes carrying deportees to Colombia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement yesterday, the White House said Petro had agreed to all of its terms. It said tariffs and sanctions would be \u201cheld in reserve\u201d and that other penalties would remain in effect until the first planeload of deportees had arrived in Colombia.
