A few protesters took that antipathy a step further \u2014 by vandalizing statues of British settlers and an English king.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The damage done in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra was a fresh sign that Australia Day, which commemorates when a British fleet sailed into Sydney Harbor to start a penal colony in the late 18th century, remains divisive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even as some Australians mark the holiday with barbecues and pool parties, critics note that it set in motion centuries of oppression of Indigenous people. Some prefer to call it Invasion Day or Survival Day, and they make their displeasure clear through protests or other actions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Sydney this week, a statue of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/digital-classroom.nma.gov.au\/defining-moments\/cook-claims-australia\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Captain James Cook<\/a>, who claimed part of the Australian continent for the British crown in 1770, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/jan\/24\/captain-cook-statue-sydney-randwick-red-paint-vandalism-australia-day-long-weekend-ntwnfb\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drenched in red paint<\/a>. Its hand and nose were severed, too. The statue had been restored after facing a similar attack last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Melbourne, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/monumentaustralia.org.au\/themes\/people\/settlement\/display\/32371-john-batman\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">monument<\/a> to John Batman, an explorer who settled the city on lands occupied by Aboriginal people, was toppled and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-25\/vandalism-melbourne-memorial-australia-day\/104859160\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">destroyed early Saturday<\/a>. Protesters in Melbourne also spray-painted the words \u201cland back\u201d on a memorial for Australian soldiers who died fighting in World War I.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And on Sunday in Canberra, the capital, there was graffiti on a statue of King George V. \u201cThe colony is falling,\u201d someone had written on its base in red paint.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Australian officials condemned the vandalism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe should find it in our hearts and in our minds to respect differences of views but not let it turn ugly,\u201d said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/12\/world\/australia\/why-are-there-so-many-jacintas-ardern.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jacinta Allan<\/a>, the state premier of Victoria, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/national\/australia-day-2025-john-batman-statue-vandalised-near-queen-victoria-market\/12c033f7-8b75-4cbc-a993-2e982166f0d8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to a report<\/a> by the television station 9News.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Representatives for the police in the states of Victoria and New South Wales said on Sunday afternoon that there had been no arrests or charges in connection with the vandalism in Sydney and Melbourne. The police in Canberra did not immediately respond to an inquiry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People have protested Australia Day for decades. Recent protests were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/26\/world\/australia\/invasion-day.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">bolstered by the global Black Lives Matter movement<\/a>, in which people in the United States, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/08\/world\/europe\/edward-colston-statue-britain-racism.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Britain<\/a> and elsewhere toppled statues they saw as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/16\/us\/protests-statues-reckoning.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">symbols of racism and oppression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last year in Melbourne, a Captain Cook statue was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/national\/st-kilda-vandals-cut-captain-cook-statue-from-base-in-melbourne\/e3ff8847-c7ba-4fe1-9106-6bbe1e78bf3b\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sawed off at the ankles<\/a>, and a monument to King George V was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/article\/2024\/jun\/10\/king-george-v-statue-beheaded-vandalised-kings-domain\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beheaded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many Australian officials are keenly aware of their country\u2019s racist colonial past, and they\u2019re not afraid to say so publicly. In one example, the City of Melbourne\u2019s website has a section on \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.melbourne.vic.gov.au\/truth-telling\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">truth-telling<\/a>\u201d that talks about developing \u201ca shared understanding of the impacts of colonization and dispossession on Aboriginal peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But merely acknowledging historical wrongs is not enough for some Indigenous activists. That was clear when <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/21\/world\/europe\/king-charles-australia-parliament-lidia-thorpe.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">King Charles III visited Australia last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou are not our king,\u201d a voice rang out shortly after Charles, who retains the ceremonial title of head of state in the former British colony, finished addressing Parliament. \u201cGive us our land back. Give us what you stole from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The voice belonged to Lidia Thorpe, an Indigenous senator and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/11\/world\/australia\/australia-price-thorpe-voice-aboriginal.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">activist for Aboriginal rights<\/a>.
