{"id":42792,"date":"2025-02-05T07:48:23","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T12:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/trump-says-u-s-should-control-gaza-strip-live-reaction-and-updates\/05\/02\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-02-05T07:48:23","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T12:48:23","slug":"trump-says-u-s-should-control-gaza-strip-live-reaction-and-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/trump-says-u-s-should-control-gaza-strip-live-reaction-and-updates\/05\/02\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Says U.S. Should Control Gaza Strip: Live Reaction and Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>President Trump\u2019s declaration on Tuesday evening that the United States could \u201ctake over\u201d the Gaza Strip and that its Palestinian population could be permanently displaced was immediately criticized in the Middle East and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>At a joint White House news conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, Mr. Trump said, \u201cThe U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too.\u201d He said the enclave, which has been devastated by more than 15 months of war between Israel and Hamas, could be redeveloped and turned into \u201cthe Riviera of the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Riyad Mansour, the leader of the Palestinian delegation to the United Nations, said on social media that instead of being relocated to other countries, the Palestinians in Gaza should be allowed to reclaim what were once Palestinian homes in Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cFor those who want to send\u201d Gazans \u201cto a happy \u2018nice place,\u2019\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Palestine_UN\/status\/1886910275598668132\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Mansour said<\/a>, using language that Mr. Trump had employed, \u201clet them go back, you know, to their original homes inside Israel. There are nice places there, and they will be happy to return to these places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">He added that Palestinians wanted to rebuild Gaza themselves, and he urged world leaders to respect their wishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The foreign ministry of Saudi Arabia issued a statement that did not directly refer to Mr. Trump\u2019s remarks, though the timing suggested that it was a response to his proposal. The ministry said it was reaffirming its \u201ccomplete rejection of any infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, whether through Israeli settlement policies, annexation of Palestinian lands or attempts to displace the Palestinian people from their land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe duty of the international community today is to work to alleviate the severe human suffering that has been inflicted upon the Palestinian people, who will remain committed to their land and will not move from it,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">In the United States, Senator Chris Murphy, Democrat of Connecticut, said that Mr. Trump\u2019s proposal \u2014 which flies in the face of decades of debate over how to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict \u2014 was meant to distract people from Elon Musk\u2019s sweeping attempts to downsize the U.S. government on Mr. Trump\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cI have news for you \u2014 we aren\u2019t taking over Gaza,\u201d Mr. Murphy said on social media. \u201cBut the media and the chattering class will focus on it for a few days and Trump will have succeeded in distracting everyone from the real story \u2014 the billionaires seizing government to steal from regular people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Another Democratic senator, Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, called Mr. Trump\u2019s proposal \u201cethnic cleansing by another name,\u201d adding, \u201cThis declaration will give ammunition to Iran and other adversaries while undermining our Arab partners in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">A former Republican congressman from Michigan, Justin Amash, whose family is of Palestinian origin, also compared Mr. Trump\u2019s proposal to ethnic cleansing. \u201cIf the United States deploys troops to forcibly remove Muslims and Christians \u2014 like my cousins \u2014 from Gaza, then not only will the U.S. be mired in another reckless occupation but it will also be guilty of the crime of ethnic cleansing,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/justinamash\/status\/1886937471474172267\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he said<\/a>. \u201cNo American of good conscience should stand for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">On Saturday, a broad group of Arab nations had rejected an earlier suggestion from Mr. Trump that Gazans to be moved to Egypt and Jordan \u2014 a proposal that did not mention the United States taking over the enclave. In a joint statement, the countries said that such a plan would risk further expanding the conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The statement, signed by officials from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/01\/world\/middleeast\/arab-nations-reject-trump-evacuate-gaza.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and other Arab countrie<\/a>s, said that any plan encouraging the \u201ctransfer or uprooting of Palestinians from their land\u201d would threaten stability in the region and \u201cundermine the chances of peace and coexistence among its people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, rejected Mr. Trump\u2019s Tuesday proposal in a statement, saying that forcible expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza would spark conflict, mar the United States\u2019 reputation and render international law meaningless. (When asked on Tuesday whether he would force Palestinians to leave, Mr. Trump said, \u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019re going to tell me no.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cGaza belongs to the Palestinian people, not the United States, and President Trump\u2019s call to displace Palestinians from their land either temporarily or permanently is an absolute non-starter,\u201d Mr. Awad said in his statement. \u201cJordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the entire Muslim world have made it clear that this delusional idea is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Israel\u2019s far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who argues that Israel should annex Palestinian territories, appeared to delight in Mr. Trump\u2019s proposal.
