{"id":42941,"date":"2025-02-07T04:59:09","date_gmt":"2025-02-07T09:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/fighting-intensifies-in-sudan-leaving-hundreds-dead\/07\/02\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-02-07T04:59:09","modified_gmt":"2025-02-07T09:59:09","slug":"fighting-intensifies-in-sudan-leaving-hundreds-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/fighting-intensifies-in-sudan-leaving-hundreds-dead\/07\/02\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Fighting Intensifies in Sudan, Leaving Hundreds Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hundreds of people, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/least-40-children-reportedly-killed-three-days-across-sudan\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including dozens of children<\/a>, have been killed in Sudan in recent days, according to civilian witnesses, medical workers and the United Nations, as fierce clashes have escalated in an internal conflict that is approaching its third year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The war between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/sudan-khartoum-military.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">unleashed a wave of devastation<\/a> across Sudan, killing tens of thousands of people, forcing millions to flee their homes and pushing parts of the vast nation <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/01\/world\/africa\/famine-declared-darfur-sudan-war.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">deeper into famine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cEverywhere you look, death is near,\u201d Mustafa Ahmed, 28, a painter who lives in Omdurman, across the Nile from the capital, Khartoum, said in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He and his family, he said, were very worried about the continued shelling and were devising ways to leave the city. \u201cI am working hard to leave and keep my family safe from dying,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the capital and adjoining cities, the region of Darfur in the west, and across several other states, the ruinous war is escalating as the warring parties strive to solidify their territorial claims, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/11\/world\/africa\/sudan-military-recaptures-city.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">regain new ones<\/a> and secure strategic military and civilian sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The conflict has been marked by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/world\/africa\/100000009893408\/sudan-war-crimes-rsf.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">gross atrocities<\/a> and ethnically motivated killings, prompting investigations from the International Criminal Court and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/07\/world\/africa\/sudan-rsf-genocide-us-sanctions.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">accusations of genocide<\/a> from the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In recent weeks, the army has amped <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/26\/world\/africa\/sudan-army-operation-capital-khartoum.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">its offensive<\/a> to retake significant parts of the capital, which it lost when the war started in April 2023. The conflict has slowly been heating up since late last year after the end of the rainy season. With the escalating deaths, injuries and attacks on civilians, activists have been calling on the United Nations to deploy a peacekeeping mission in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In January, the army captured a strategic oil refinery north of Khartoum and broke the siege on its main headquarters in central Khartoum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sudanese.armed.forces\/posts\/pfbid0o7QeVDwUG7VqUmBSJg9VuEiLCXfHCL3iQ6mh84UxGjrf9qk3j8RruLvF4hH2QUael\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">visited the facility<\/a> days later, and promised to remove the paramilitary forces from \u201cevery corner of Sudan.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But even as army officers celebrated their victory, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights accused fighters and militia allied with them of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2025\/01\/sudan-un-human-rights-chief-alarmed-summary-executions-khartoum-north\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">summarily executing<\/a> at least 18 people in the newly liberated areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Fighting has also escalated in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/11\/world\/africa\/sudan-war.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Omdurman<\/a>, which is home to about 2.4 million people and is Sudan\u2019s second-largest city. Sudan\u2019s Health Ministry said that at least 54 people were killed and 158 others injured on Saturday when the paramilitary forces shelled a busy market there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Just days later, on Tuesday, the ministry said that six people were killed and 38 others were wounded when mortar shells hit a main hospital that was already treating people who had been injured in the fighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Fierce clashes have also ensued this week in South Kordofan, which shares a border with South Sudan, and Blue Nile states, where millions were already facing dire humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Kadugli city in South Kordofan, the latest infighting has left at least 80 people dead, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/sudan\/protect-civilians-trapped-crisis-south-kordofan-and-blue-nile-statement-united-nations-resident-and-humanitarian-coordinator-sudan-clementine-nkweta-salami\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations said<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Asim Ahmed Musa, who lives in the city, said many people did not have access to adequate food or medicine. Workers were unable to receive their salaries, he said, and many families had limited cash, especially after Sudan introduced new bank notes last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Clashes have continued all over the city, he said, and the thud of shelling and gunfire had forced many people to hunker down. \u201cThe citizens are currently living in a state of panic,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople are scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The western region of Darfur has also been the site of intense clashes recently, an agonizing reprise for an area that experienced a genocide just over two decades ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since the beginning of the conflict, the paramilitary forces, or the R.S.F., and their allies have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/07\/world\/africa\/war-sudan-darfur-region.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ratcheted up attacks<\/a> in the region and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/16\/world\/africa\/sudan-darfur-fighting.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">consolidated their control<\/a> over major cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/06\/19\/world\/africa\/sudan-darfur-siege.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">laid siege to El Fasher<\/a>, the capital of North Darfur, where they have been clashing with the army and their allies. An attack on the only functioning hospital in El Fasher in late January killed 70 people and injured 19 others, according to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Fighting across the region has also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/sudan\/sudan-conflict-al-fasher-north-darfur-flash-update-no-01-12-may-2024-enar\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">displaced<\/a> hundreds of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/sudan\/dtm-sudan-flash-alert-conflict-nyala-janoub-nyala-town-south-darfur-update-023-06-february-2025\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">families<\/a>, according to the United Nations, pushing some of them to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/sudan\/dtm-sudan-flash-alert-tina-tina-town-north-darfur-update-001-06-february-2025\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flee across the border<\/a> into Chad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The latest conflict has also not spared children. At least 40 children were killed in just three days this month, UNICEF said this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAs the conflict persists, children\u2019s lives and futures hang in the balance and for their sakes, the violence must end immediately,\u201d the UNICEF Sudan representative, Annmarie Swai, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/least-40-children-reportedly-killed-three-days-across-sudan\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For now, the warring sides insist that they can ultimately quash the other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite incurring losses in the capital, Lt. Gen.
