The posts misrepresented a photo of vouchers that a company reportedly gave staff instead of paychecks. Pictures of legal tender on the website of the People&#8217;s Bank of China (PBoC) &#8212; the country&#8217;s central bank that has sole authority to print money &#8212; do not include the supposed bills from Changchun.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250203092345\/https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/2702494433384501\/posts\/3576400602660542\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:screenshot;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">screenshot<\/a> of the vouchers was shared on Chinese platform Xiaohongshu, known as RedNote in English, in a post that joked Changchun was &#8220;so awesome it can print its own currency&#8221; and that &#8220;part of workers&#8217; salaries can be paid with it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The January 7 post &#8212; which was later deleted &#8212; showed a photo of a wad of vouchers valued at 50 yuan ($6.90) each.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<p><span>Screenshot of the misleading post taken on February 4<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Workers in several Chinese provinces &#8212; including Henan, Hubei and Guangdong &#8212; protested in the lead-up to Lunar New Year celebrations in January for their employers to settle unpaid salaries, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.clb.org.hk\/?i18n_language=en_US&amp;map=1&amp;startDate=2025-01&amp;endDate=2025-01&amp;eventId=2025020206465329810\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:database;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">database<\/a> maintained by rights group China Labour Bulletin (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/F4X9-ACXG\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">China&#8217;s top court ordered lower courts to prioritise hearings involving unpaid wages ahead of the holidays and penalise companies that fail to pay workers on time, according to state news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20241223\/b9f87da61baa46458b651683dd9f2584\/c.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Xinhua;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Xinhua<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/F4GM-JBG4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">China has so far failed to fully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/international-news\/20250116-china-set-to-post-sluggish-growth-as-doldrums-deepen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:rebound;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">rebound<\/a> from the Covid-19 pandemic, with domestic spending mired in a slump and indebted local governments dragging on growth (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250204021101\/https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/international-news\/20250116-china-set-to-post-sluggish-growth-as-doldrums-deepen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The photo spread on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250204024727\/https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fwong.reiko%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02fAdch4wvmzhYoJcbhHBBD4YkaGDv81qVuS9PvTQHtGHEPboNT5B8kG5zA15AbVpul\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/R4N8-533N\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:X;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">X<\/a> and China&#8217;s version of TikTok\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/XA9Z-BJBG\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Douyin;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Douyin<\/a>, prompting mockery towards Changchun authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Changchun is independent now,&#8221; one person commented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Grain, oil and pork ration vouchers may be introduced in the next stage,&#8221; another appeared to joke.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">&#8216;No pay for months&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, AFP found photos of the same vouchers in articles about a Changchun real estate developer who reportedly dolled them out to staff as a form of payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Dazhong Zhuoyue Holdings Group used the vouchers to pay employees&#8217; wages instead of cash, Chinese state-affiliated outlet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctdsb.net\/c1716_202501\/2345641.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jimu News;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Jimu News<\/a> reported on January 6\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/3ZMB-8W28\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archive link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archive link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Jimu published photos of vouchers for various amounts, including the 50-yuan vouchers seen in social media posts, which show the names of two of the developer&#8217;s subsidiaries &#8212; I haven&#8217;t been paid for three months and this is the salary I got,&#8221; the worker was quoted as saying in a video posted online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;This is the result of my hard work.
