{"id":43358,"date":"2025-02-12T12:14:35","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T17:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/the-n-e-a-s-new-gender-and-diversity-edicts-worry-arts-groups\/12\/02\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-02-12T12:14:35","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T17:14:35","slug":"the-n-e-a-s-new-gender-and-diversity-edicts-worry-arts-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/the-n-e-a-s-new-gender-and-diversity-edicts-worry-arts-groups\/12\/02\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"The N.E.A.\u2019s New Gender and Diversity Edicts Worry Arts Groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The National Endowment for the Arts is telling arts groups not to use federal funds to promote \u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion\u201d or \u201cgender ideology\u201d in ways that run afoul of President Trump\u2019s executive orders \u2014 causing confusion and concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Black Girls Dance, a Chicago-based nonprofit that trains and mentors young dancers, was recently approved for a $10,000 grant to help finance an annual holiday show called \u201cMary.\u201d Now the small company is wondering if it still qualifies for the money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was the company\u2019s first grant from the N.E.A., and Erin Barnett, the nonprofit\u2019s founder and executive director, said that receiving it had been \u201ca step of validation \u2014 like \u2018We see you and we support the work that you\u2019re doing.\u2019\u201d But she said that if the grant were canceled for running afoul of the new requirements, she would persist. \u201cI serve a God that sits on the highest throne of all, and he\u2019s not going to stop this show,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is unclear what the new rules will mean for groups seeking grants, or for those that already have them in the pipeline. Many arts organizations have pledged to support diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and several groups that have received funding in the past have presented works about transgender and nonbinary people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/grants\/legal-requirements-and-assurance-of-compliance#:~:text=The%20applicant%20will%20not%20operate,with%20Executive%20Order%20No.%2014173.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The new N.E.A. rules<\/a> require applicants to agree not to operate diversity programs \u201cthat violate any applicable federal anti-discrimination laws\u201d and call on grant applicants to pledge not to use federal funds to \u201cpromote gender ideology.\u201d They refer to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/defending-women-from-gender-ideology-extremism-and-restoring-biological-truth-to-the-federal-government\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an executive order<\/a> Mr. Trump signed that declares that the United States recognizes only \u201ctwo sexes, male and female.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The N.E.A. did not answer questions about whether organizations that have already been told they would receive grant money would be affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is a longstanding legal requirement that all recipients of federal funds comply with applicable federal anti-discrimination laws, regulations and executive orders,\u201d the endowment\u2019s spokeswoman, Elizabeth Auclair, said in an email. \u201cThe N.E.A. is continuing to review the recent executive orders and related documents to ensure compliance and provide the required reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During Mr. Trump\u2019s first term, he called for the elimination of the arts endowment. (It survived, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/15\/arts\/trump-arts-nea-funding.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">thanks to bipartisan support in Congress<\/a>, and has a current budget of roughly $200 million a year.) It is not clear what its outlook is now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The endowment is currently without a full-time leader because its chair since 2021, Maria Rosario Jackson, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/stories\/blog\/2025\/message-nea-chair-maria-rosario-jackson\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left the day of Mr. Trump\u2019s inauguration<\/a>. It is currently being overseen by Mary Anne Carter, who led the agency during the first Trump administration, and who is now serving with the title of \u201csenior advisor.\u201d Agency observers and grant recipients were generally positive about Ms. Carter, saying that things had run smoothly when she previously led the agency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last week, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/07\/arts\/national-endowment-for-the-arts-trump.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the N.E.A. said that it was eliminating its \u201cChallenge America\u201d program<\/a>, a small grant program supporting projects for underserved groups and communities, and that its general grant program would give priority to projects that \u201ccelebrate and honor the nation\u2019s rich artistic heritage and creativity\u201d during the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of American independence in July 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Latinitas, which offers educational programming for girls in central Texas, received a $10,000 award under that program last month to go toward a $30,000 project to install mosaics that honor inspiring women from East Austin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI emailed the N.E.A. today to check in our status, and the response was rather vague,\u201d said Gabriela Kane Guardia, the organization\u2019s executive director. \u201cWe\u2019re very concerned because we were absolutely counting on those funds to make this project possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many groups are unsure whether they can count on funds they were expecting.
