The following year, \u201cThe Wedding Band,\u201d was staged at the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stratfordfestival.ca\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stratford Festival<\/a> in Ontario, making it a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/29\/theater\/stratford-festival-canada-wedding-band.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">welcome second coming<\/a> for our theater critic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The play about an interracial couple \u2014 a Black woman, played by Antonette Rudder, and a white man, Cyrus Lane \u2014 who, in 1918 South Carolina, can\u2019t wed, is a searing examination of a miscegenation nation. Writing for The New York Times, Jesse Green called the 2023 Stratford production, directed by Sam White, a \u201crevelation,\u201d adding that the festival\u2019s revival \u201cconfirms the play\u2019s vitality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">From Green\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/29\/theater\/stratford-festival-canada-wedding-band.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">critic\u2019s notebook<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"css-1ggt3fz etf134l0\">\n<p class=\"css-12wzsk6 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s a joyful thing when a great play that seemed to be lost is found. How much more so when its greatness is confirmed and the play takes root in the soil of a new time. That was my experience seeing Alice Childress\u2019s \u201cWedding Band\u201d \u2026 The director Sam White\u2019s production unexpectedly adds another layer of tragedy. Her staging emphasizes the hard-won pleasures of the central relationship, so that something valuable is felt to be lost when the world intervenes. \u2026 We see how the tragedy of racism makes victims of everyone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3220654b\">\u2018Vanya on 42nd Street\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Stream it on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Vanya-42nd-Street-Andre-Gregory\/dp\/B0054QTWJK\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Prime<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pluto.tv\/us\/on-demand\/movies\/67539715e07f280013601753\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pluto TV<\/a> or the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/therokuchannel.roku.com\/details\/f3eb66d8de61540ea0442d8fba1b4287\/vanya-on-42nd-street\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roku Channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">New York is experiencing something of an explosion of Chekhov. \u201cThe Seagull\u201d featured prominently in Theaterlab\u2019s recent production of \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/theaterlabnyc.com\/nina-january-23-february-9-2025\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nina<\/a>\u201d; \u201cThe Cherry Orchard\u201d is coming to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/stannswarehouse.org\/show\/the-cherry-orchard\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Ann\u2019s Warehouse<\/a> next month, along with \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/vanyaonstage.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vanya<\/a>,\u201d an adaptation of \u201cUncle Vanya,\u201d starring Andrew Scott, Andrew Scott and Andrew Scott (he plays every role). <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/27\/theater\/andrew-scott-vanya.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Its Off Broadway<\/a> debut comes after a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/theatre\/what-to-see\/vanya-duke-of-yorks-theatre-review-andrew-scott\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">highly<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/22\/theater\/vanya-andrew-scott.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">praised<\/a> run in London. The one-man show, adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Sam Yates, won <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/officiallondontheatre.com\/olivier-awards\/year\/olivier-awards-2024\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last year\u2019s Olivier Award<\/a> \u2014 Britain\u2019s equivalent of the Tonys.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But you don\u2019t have to be in a theater to take in Chekhov. If you\u2019ve never seen \u201cVanya on 42nd Street,\u201d the 1994 Louis Malle <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/10\/19\/movies\/film-review-vanya-on-42d-street-spare-chekhov-begins-sneakily.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">film<\/a> of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/02\/26\/movies\/andre-gregory-and-louis-malles-vanya-on-42nd-street.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Andr\u00e9 Gregory\u2019s<\/a> production, now is a timely moment to watch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The movie, starring Wallace Shawn and Julianne Moore, gets a bit heady in its conceit: Over the course of three years, Gregory and a group of actors gather to study Chekhov through performance workshops, then stage the play casually, as if for a rehearsal, in an abandoned theater. The result is a lively experiment with natural, intimate performances. The Times critic Janet Maslin applauded the \u201cvisual elegance that seems to isolate and purify its characters and their troubles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is bare-bones Chekhov,\u201d Maslin wrote, \u201cthough it is hardly Chekhov without cachet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-61aa5e1b\">\u2018Circumstances Affecting the Heat of the Sun\u2019s Rays\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Stream it on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/latw.org\/title\/circumstances-affecting-heat-suns-rays\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">L.A. To understand the obsession or refresh your memory, a binge might be in order. The program was founded in 2021 during the pandemic as a platform for emerging Black voices in theater and film \u2014 the first season featured actors in masks, streamed from a theater to viewers at home \u2014 but the idea was germinated the previous summer. Seeking a stage for Black storytelling, the founders began dreaming up a response to protest marches and rallies and to help amplify underrepresented artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Each year since, the festival has presented a free weekend of original plays, musicals, cabaret performances and panel discussions across Detroit.
