It took home four awards on Sunday at Britain\u2019s equivalent of the Oscars, commonly known as the BAFTAs, although, aside from best film, those were all in minor categories: best editing, best adapted screenplay and outstanding British film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In securing the best film award, \u201cConclave\u201d beat Sean Baker\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/17\/movies\/anora-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Anora<\/a>,\u201d a dramedy in which an exotic dancer marries a the son of a Russian oligarch, and \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/19\/movies\/the-brutalist-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Brutalist<\/a>,\u201d about a Jewish architect (Adrien Brody) rebuilding his life in the United States after the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It also triumphed over the Bob Dylan biopic \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/25\/movies\/a-complete-unknown-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">A Complete Unknown<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/13\/movies\/emilia-perez-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cConclave\u201d hadn\u2019t previously featured among the major winners this awards season. It only secured one Golden Globe, for best screenplay, at a ceremony in which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/05\/arts\/golden-globes#golden-globes-brutalist-emilia-perez\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d and \u201cThe Brutalist\u201d were the big winners<\/a>. More recently, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/12\/movies\/oscars-race-emilia-perez-anora.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the momentum for the best picture Oscar<\/a> had swung to \u201cAnora,\u201d after that movie picked up major honors at this year\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/07\/movies\/critics-choice-awards-winners-complete-list.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Critic\u2019s Choice<\/a> ceremony and the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/09\/movies\/anora-wins-producers-and-directors-guild-awards.html?timespastHighlight=Directors,Guild,of,America?timespastHighlight=Directors,Guild,of,America\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Directors Guild of America<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/09\/movies\/anora-wins-producers-and-directors-guild-awards.html?timespastHighlight=Directors,Guild,of,America?timespastHighlight=Directors,Guild,of,America\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Producers Guild of America<\/a> awards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yet the prominence of \u201cConclave\u201d at the BAFTAs will give the movie momentum going into this year\u2019s Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2. There is significant overlap between the voting bodies for both awards, and the BAFTAs and Oscars regularly have the same winners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The cast and crew of \u201cConclave\u201d looked stunned when the best film prize was announced. Isabella Rossellini, who plays a nun in the movie, stood onstage smiling gleefully throughout Berger\u2019s acceptance speech, in which he said he was \u201cdeeply humbled\u201d to see his film receive the honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the best director category, Brady Corbet was the victor for \u201cThe Brutalist,\u201d winning out over Berger as well as Sean Baker (\u201cAnora\u201d), Jacques Audiard (\u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d), Denis Villeneuve (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/29\/movies\/dune-part-two-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dune: Part Two<\/a>\u201d) and Coralie Fargeat (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/19\/movies\/the-substance-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Substance,<\/a>\u201d a body-horror gross-out about a washed-up TV star, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/11\/movies\/demi-moore-substance-oscars.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">played by Demi Moore<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe Brutalist\u201d had a strong night, taking home four awards \u2014 the same as \u201cConclave\u201d \u2014 with Adrien Brody winning the prize for best leading actor. In that category, Brody beat Colman Domingo (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/11\/movies\/sing-sing-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sing Sing<\/a>\u201d), Ralph Fiennes (\u201cConclave\u201d), Hugh Grant (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/07\/movies\/heretic-review-hugh-grant.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Heretic<\/a>\u201d), Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet (\u201cA Complete Unknown\u201d) and Sebastian Stan (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/10\/movies\/the-apprentice-review-donald-trump-roy-cohn.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Apprentice<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the leading actress category, Mikey Madison won for her role in \u201cAnora,\u201d besting Demi Moore, as well as Cynthia Erivo (\u201cWicked\u201d), <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/06\/movies\/marianne-jean-baptiste-mike-leigh-oscars.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Marianne Jean-Baptiste<\/a> (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/05\/movies\/hard-truths-review-mike-leigh.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hard Truths<\/a>\u201d) and Saoirse Ronan (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/03\/movies\/the-outrun-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Outrun<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In her acceptance speech, Madison asked for a moment \u201cto recognize the sex worker community,\u201d adding: \u201cI see you. You deserve respect and human decency.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n was also a nominee for best actress for \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez,\u201d although she did not attend the ceremony, held just weeks <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/10\/business\/media\/netflix-oscars-emilia-perez.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">after a journalist resurfaced<\/a> some old social media posts in which Gasc\u00f3n made derogatory comments about Muslims and George Floyd, among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Audiard, the director of \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez,\u201d accepted the award for best film not in the English language, he thanked \u201cmy dear Karla Sof\u00eda\u201d alongside the rest of the movie\u2019s stars. Zoe Salda\u00f1a also name-checked Gasc\u00f3n, among others, when she accepted the best supporting actress award.
