The fossils are described in a <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1080\/02724634.2024.2441903\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:study published February 19 in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">study published February 19 in the <em>Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology<\/em><\/a> and reveal what the predator hierarchy unique to Cretaceous Australia might have looked like.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">G\u2019day theropods<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/carnegiemnh.org\/event\/moriarty-science-seminar-the-mysterious-megaraptorids-giant-clawed-meat-eating-dinosaurs-from-the-southern-continents\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:megaraptorids;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">megaraptorids<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/animal\/Carcharodontosaurus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:carcharodontosaurus;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>carcharodontosaurus<\/em><\/a> were theropod dinosaurs. Theopods were primarily carnivores and walked on two hind legs. They range in size from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/animal\/coelurosaur\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:small Coelurosaur;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">small <em>Coelurosaur<\/em><\/a> up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/deep-snouted-tyrannosaur-fossils-uncovered-200643818.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:giant Tyrannosaurs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">giant <em>Tyrannosaurs<\/em><\/a>. They were about 20 feet long and have mostly been found in southern continents. Source\u2013Museums Victoria<\/em><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">The dominant predators<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Paleontologists uncovered these <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1080\/02724634.2024.2441903\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:five new theropod fossils;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">five new theropod fossils<\/a> along the coastline in the state of Victoria in southeastern Australia. They were unearthed in the upper Strzelecki Group (about 121.4 to 118 million years old) and the Eumeralla Formation (about 113 to 108 million years old). The fossils suggest that modern-Victoria\u2019s ancient ecosystem was dominated by these powerful theropods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe discovery of <em>carcharodontosaurs<\/em> in Australia is groundbreaking,\u201d Jake Kotevski, a study co-author and Museums Victoria Research Institute and Monash University PhD student, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1074172\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said in a statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s fascinating to see how Victoria\u2019s predator hierarchy diverged from South America, where <em>carcharodontosaurs<\/em> reached <em>Tyrannosaurus rex<\/em>-like sizes up to 13 metres [42.6 feet], towering over megaraptorids. Here, the roles were reversed, highlighting the uniqueness of Australia\u2019s Cretaceous ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Two of the fossils <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1080\/02724634.2024.2441903\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:represent the world\u2019s oldest known mega raptors;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">represent the world\u2019s oldest known mega raptors<\/a> and expand our understanding of the group\u2019s evolutionary history.
