\n<\/p>\n
The papal thriller \u201cConclave\u201d won the top prize at the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, thwarting a guild sweep by \u201cAnora,\u201d which had previously scored big wins earlier this month at ceremonies thrown by the producers, directors and writers guilds<\/a>.<\/p>\n The last three winners of SAG\u2019s top prize \u2014 \u201cOppenheimer<\/a>,\u201d \u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once,\u201d and \u201cCODA\u201d \u2014 all went on to win best picture at the Oscars. Some of those had been season-long sweepers, unlike \u201cConclave,\u201d which can boast only one other best-picture award, from the BAFTAs<\/a>. Still, the win indicates that the Oscar race remains fluid leading up to the March 2 ceremony.<\/p>\n SAG\u2019s lead-actor race produced an upset victory, too, as \u201cA Complete Unknown\u201d star Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet finally nabbed a prize for his portrayal of Bob Dylan; the award had gone all season to Adrien Brody (\u201cThe Brutalist\u201d). \u201cI\u2019m really in pursuit of greatness,\u201d Chalamet said when accepting his award. \u201cI know people don\u2019t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Over the last three years, every individual acting winner at SAG has gone on to repeat at the Oscars except last year\u2019s SAG winner Lily Gladstone (\u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d), who lost the best-actress Oscar to Emma Stone (\u201cPoor Things\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n This year\u2019s best-actress battle is even more competitive, with \u201cThe Substance\u201d lead Demi Moore and the \u201cAnora\u201d actress Mikey Madison trading industry prizes all season. And although the Golden Globe winner Fernanda Torres (\u201cI\u2019m Still Here\u201d) was not nominated at the SAG Awards, she has nevertheless mounted a late surge with many Oscar voters I\u2019ve spoken to, who have just gotten around to watching her movie.<\/p>\n At the SAG Awards, it was Moore who triumphed. As she did at the Golden Globes<\/a> in January, she gave a galvanizing speech that she dedicated to \u201cthat little girl who didn\u2019t believe in herself.\u201d As she grew emotional, Moore closed with, \u201cThe words are kind of beyond me. So I\u2019m just going to have to say thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n In SAG\u2019s supporting races, prizes went to Zoe Salda\u00f1a (\u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d) and Kieran Culkin (\u201cA Real Pain\u201d) who have swept their categories all season and are the prohibitive favorites at the Oscars.<\/p>\n \u201cBelieve it or not, this actually means a lot to me,\u201d Culkin said, after riffing at length about the weight of the SAG statuette and the self-seriousness of his fellow actors. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to be sincere here.
