{"id":44667,"date":"2025-02-28T01:04:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T06:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/doug-ford-re-elected-as-ontario-premier-in-vote-pitched-as-fight-against-trump\/28\/02\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-02-28T01:04:48","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T06:04:48","slug":"doug-ford-re-elected-as-ontario-premier-in-vote-pitched-as-fight-against-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/doug-ford-re-elected-as-ontario-premier-in-vote-pitched-as-fight-against-trump\/28\/02\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Doug Ford Re-elected as Ontario Premier in Vote Pitched as Fight Against Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Doug Ford, the premier of Canada\u2019s most populous province, Ontario, was re-elected on Thursday following a campaign that focused less on standard domestic issues and more on the question of who would be best equipped to take on President Trump in a possible trade war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation projected his victory 10 minutes after the polls closed, saying his party, the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, had won a majority, its third since 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cDonald Trump thinks he can break us,\u201d Mr. Ford told supporters gathered in Toronto to celebrate after the results were announced. \u201cMake no mistake: Canada won\u2019t start a fight with the U.S., but you better believe we\u2019re ready to win one,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Ford, 60, had made it a point of his campaign to project strength, threatening to retaliate against Mr. Trump\u2019s proposed tariffs on Canadian exports and promising to go as far as cutting off the energy that the United States buys from Ontario.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since calling for the snap election a month ago, Mr. Ford has taken a handful of days away from the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/15\/world\/canada\/canada-premiers-trump-tariffs.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">campaign trail to travel to Washington<\/a> to make a case for why tariffs would be ill advised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ontario, with 16 million people, or about 40 percent of Canada\u2019s population, is home to some of the country\u2019s major industries, including automotive, manufacturing and technology. Tariffs would deal the province a deeply painful blow, including significant job losses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Before Thursday\u2019s vote, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-ca\/doug-ford-clear-winner-ontario-leadership-debate\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polls<\/a> had consistently shown Mr. Ford\u2019s political opponents \u2014 Bonnie Crombie of the Liberal Party, and Marit Stiles of the New Democratic Party, whose policies put her to the left of the Liberals \u2014 trailing him by double digits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat\u2019s happening south of the border is occupying more of people\u2019s attention maybe than what\u2019s happening in Ontario,\u201d contributing to a \u201cslightly uninteresting election,\u201d said Daniel Rubenson, a political science professor at Toronto Metropolitan University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Further sapping some of the drama, the three candidates tended to agree on the main issues, said John Beebe, founder of the same university\u2019s Democratic Engagement Exchange, an organization focused on voter participation. This accord on policy included the need to increase the number of family doctors, build up transit networks and lower costs for developers to build houses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere\u2019s broad consensus about what the issues are and I think it makes it really hard for the average voter to say, \u2018OK, who has the better plan?\u2019,\u201d Mr. Beebe said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even though Mr. Ford\u2019s party already commanded a majority of seats in the provincial legislature, Mr. Ford called an early election \u2014 more than a year before its scheduled date in June 2026 \u2014 because he said the party needed \u201ca strong mandate\u201d from voters to fight Mr. Trump\u2019s tariffs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Ford\u2019s opponents questioned the timing of Thursday\u2019s election, noting that if tariffs were imposed, they would support additional spending to help Ontarians cope with any economic pain caused by the levies, rendering an early election unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They also pointed out that the federal government would be the main negotiating party with Mr. Trump\u2019s administration, not Ontario, though Mr. Ford could take some retaliatory measures on his own.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tariffs could cost Ontario as many as 500,000 jobs, Mr. Ford said, particularly in the province\u2019s auto industry, where <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/02\/world\/americas\/trump-tariffs-windsor-canada.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">production is so intertwined with the United States<\/a> that car parts can cross the border multiple times a day during assembly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump said he plans to apply 25 percent tariffs on Canadian exports unless Canada strengthens its border security. Mr. Trump and Canada agreed to a 30-day reprieve, which is set to expire on Tuesday, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to adopt various steps to fortify the border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAt this crucial time, we must work together to defend Canadian interests, protect workers and businesses, and grow our economy,\u201d Mr. Trudeau said in a statement congratulating Mr. Ford.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Ford was first elected in 2018, winning a majority government after 15 years of Liberal Party rule. He had run on a platform that focused on lowering taxes and developing industries, like mining in the northern part of the province.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The son of a businessman who was also a provincial politician, he rose through party politics by marketing himself as an anti-establishment candidate, and during his first premiership campaign he drew comparisons to Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Before becoming Ontario\u2019s leader, Mr. Ford served as a city councilor in Toronto, where his brother, Rob Ford, was the mayor who attracted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/23\/world\/americas\/rob-ford-dies.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">international notoriety<\/a> after he confessed to using crack cocaine. He died in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some critics have questioned Mr. Ford\u2019s close relationship with developers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A plan to open up a protected area of farmland, forest and wetlands around Toronto, known as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbelt.ca\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the greenbelt<\/a>, to development is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/12\/world\/canada\/ontario-auditor-greenbelt-developers.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">under investigation<\/a> by provincial police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But with his victory Thursday, it seemed clear that his core message had resonated with the province\u2019s voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis election is about who we are and what we stand for,\u201d Mr. Ford said in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fordnation\/status\/1892324841719538091\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">campaign ad<\/a>, denouncing Mr. Trump\u2019s threats to annex Canada. \u201cSo let me be clear: Canada will never be the 51st state.
