There is still <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/03\/world\/europe\/greece-train-crash.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lingering anger in the country<\/a> over the government\u2019s failure to put any of its politicians under scrutiny over the loss of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here is what to know about the strike and the enduring anger over the accident.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-244a0518\">What did the strike entail?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rallies took place in Athens and across Greece, with protesters calling for those at fault in the crash to be punished and for rail safety to be improved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The strike involved public- and private-sector workers. A police official estimated that the Athens protest attracted at least 180,000 people, the largest demonstration in the Greek capital in years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">All commercial flights to and from Greek airports were grounded, and no ferries or trains were running. Limited public transportation was operating in Athens to allow demonstrators to get to the rally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Schools and hospitals were affected as teachers and health care workers joined the action. Lawyers and ambulance workers walked out, too, while many shops closed. Several popular artists also canceled planned shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the rally in Athens, many expressed anger and frustration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe need to send them a message,\u201d said Nikolas \u039aatsambanis, 19, a student of music production, referring to Greece\u2019s politicians. \u201cThey lie through their teeth,\u201d he said, adding that he no longer travels by train, having known one of the crash survivors. \u201cMy best friend\u2019s sister was in the seventh car, and she\u2019s still in shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Niki Antypa, 68, said that she used to take \u201cnice trips\u201d by train but was now also scared to travel, even on public transit. \u201cThey have no control of the railways,\u201d she said, accusing the authorities of scrambling to hide evidence about the rail state of the network after the crash.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-32bab647\">What happened in the train accident?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On the night of Feb. 28, 2023, a passenger train and a freight train collided head-on near Tempe, Greece, on a route linking Athens with the northern port of Thessaloniki. Many of those who died in the crash were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/02\/world\/europe\/greece-train-crash.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">young students returning from a holiday weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the time, the Greek authorities blamed human error, saying that a routing mistake by a station master had put the passenger train onto the same track as an oncoming freight train. But they also admitted to shortfalls in Greece\u2019s railway infrastructure and delays in installing modern safety systems that could have averted the disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The deadly episode set off days of protests as people demanded accountability and greater rail safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Two years later, questions remain about the exact circumstances of the crash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A report by an independent rail and air investigation authority set up after the tragedy, whose <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harsia.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/EODASAAM_Accident_Investigation_Tempi-1.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">results were made public on Thursday<\/a>, found that delays in installing electronic signaling and remote surveillance systems played a key role in the collision, as did chronic understaffing and underfunding resulting from cutbacks enforced during Greece\u2019s decade-long financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The report also criticized the Greek authorities for flawed mapping of the crash site, a factor that it said had resulted in the loss of \u201cpotentially vital information.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Investigators added that an \u201cenormous fireball\u201d from the crash, which probably killed five to seven of the victims, may have been stoked by a \u201chitherto unknown fuel.\u201d They called for further investigation into that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/prorata.gr\/2025\/02\/26\/%cf%83%cf%86%cf%85%ce%b3%ce%bc%ce%bf%cf%83-%cf%86%ce%b5%ce%b2%cf%81%ce%bf%cf%85%ce%b1%cf%81%ce%b9%ce%bf%cf%83-2025\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Polls<\/a> conducted in recent weeks showed that most people in the country <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pulserc.gr\/1310\/%ce%b4%ce%b7%ce%bc%ce%bf%cf%83%ce%ba%cf%8c%cf%80%ce%b7%cf%83%ce%b7-%cf%83%ce%ba%ce%b1%cf%8a-pulse-%cf%86%ce%b5%ce%b2%cf%81%ce%bf%cf%85%ce%ac%cf%81%ce%b9%ce%bf%cf%82-2025\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were unhappy<\/a> with the government\u2019s handling of the disaster. Many <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/adedy.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025.02.05-%CE%91%CF%86%CE%AF%CF%83%CE%B1-24%CF%89%CF%81%CE%B7-%CE%A0%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%BB%CE%B1%CE%B4%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AE-%CE%B1%CF%80%CE%B5%CF%81%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1-%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B9%CF%82-28-%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%85-%CE%A6%CE%BB%CE%B5%CE%B2%CE%AC%CF%81%CE%B7.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also suspect<\/a> a cover-up of who was responsible \u2014 a charge that the government denies.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3f0a196c\">How have the authorities responded?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Greece has made some progress in improving railway safety since the crash. The infrastructure and transportation minister, Christos Staikouras, told Greek television on Thursday that modern signals and remote surveillance systems had been added along the entire Athens-to-Thessaloniki route after the accident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But a cyclone then damaged the systems, leaving them not fully functional on \u201ca significant part\u201d of that route, Mr. Staikouras said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He said the damage would be repaired by summer 2026 and that Greece was working on an plan agreed upon with the European Commission to improve training for railway workers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The authorities have said that a judicial investigation is continuing into who may be responsible for the crash. The dozens under investigation so far are mostly railway officials.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4c670736\">How did the public respond to the strike?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The demonstration in Athens started peacefully, with families pushing children in strollers and retired people joining students on the streets of the capital, holding banners calling for \u201cjustice\u201d and \u201cthe guilty to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Selini Vazeou, 20, who is studying to be a teacher, said she felt compelled to attend the rally even though she feared that nothing would change. \u201cI don\u2019t believe our voice will be heard,\u201d she said. \u201cThey always find a way to cover things up and keep their jobs,\u201d she said of the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On the fringes of the protest, a group of primary-school children with their parents and teachers held a banner that read, \u201cJustice now.\u201d They chanted, \u201cWe\u2019ll never forget the crime,\u201d and \u201cThe new generation will avenge you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Violence erupted in the early afternoon after a few hundred hooded youths broke away from the main protest and threw firebombs and chunks of paving stone at police officers, who responded by firing tear gas.
