After all, the last three winners of SAG\u2019s top prize \u2014 \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d \u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once\u201d and \u201cCODA\u201d \u2014 all won the best picture statuette at the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But it isn\u2019t exactly that clear cut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Those past three films had essentially swept their awards season, and aside from the SAG Awards, \u201cConclave\u201d has won only one other best picture title, at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/16\/movies\/baftas-winners-conclave-brutalist.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the BAFTAs<\/a> in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnora,\u201d the comedy-drama about a stripper (played by Mikey Madison) whose modern fairy-tale romance implodes, had several of the other early big wins this season, including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/09\/movies\/anora-wins-producers-and-directors-guild-awards.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">two major industry prizes<\/a> \u2014 from the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America \u2014 that almost always signal a best-picture Oscar up ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Also, Edward Berger, the director of \u201cConclave,\u201d was not nominated for a best directing Oscar. Only six films in the history of the Oscars have won best picture without a best directing nomination, most recently \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/12\/movies\/coda-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CODA<\/a>\u201d in 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<p><h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-34141020\">Scandals Plague \u2018Emilia P\u00e9rez\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Just a few weeks ago, \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d was on top of the world. The Spanish-language musical out of France had earned 13 Oscar nominations, the most of any film this year (and nearly the most ever), and its lead, Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/23\/movies\/karla-sofia-gascon-oscar-history-trans-actress.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">made history<\/a> as the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Academy Award, in the best actress category no less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And at the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/05\/arts\/golden-globes\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Golden Globes<\/a> in January, out of its 10 nominations, it won four awards: best non-English-language motion picture; best musical or comedy motion picture; best original song; and Zoe Salda\u00f1a won for best supporting actress. \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d also won two coveted honors at the Cannes Film Festival last year, including the jury prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the film\u2019s prospects have quickly eroded. In late January, the journalist Sarah Hagi resurfaced <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/31\/movies\/karla-sofia-gascon-apology-netflix.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a series of derogatory comments<\/a> that Gasc\u00f3n had posted years ago on Twitter, now known as X. In them, she denigrated Muslims, called George Floyd a \u201cdrug-addicted con artist,\u201d and even criticized the diverse winners of the 2021 Oscar telecast, writing: \u201cI didn\u2019t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Women%27s_Strike_2018\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">8-M<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Netflix \u2014 the distributor of \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d that was hoping that the film would finally earn the streamer a best picture Oscar \u2014 swiftly tried to mitigate the damage. \u201cI want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n, 52, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/31\/movies\/karla-sofia-gascon-apology-netflix.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said in an apology<\/a> provided by Netflix.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/05\/movies\/emilia-perez-oscars-scandal.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gasc\u00f3n didn\u2019t drop it<\/a> after that, instead opting to keep defending herself on her Instagram, saying that some of her opinions had been misconstrued and that some posts had been doctored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since then, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/10\/business\/media\/netflix-oscars-emilia-perez.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Netflix has distanced itself<\/a> from Gasc\u00f3n, instead making Salda\u00f1a, who is up for supporting-actress Oscar, the face of the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While that might seem like enough drama to derail the film\u2019s Oscar dream, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/08\/movies\/karla-sofia-gascon-emilia-perez-controversies.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">backlash against the film<\/a> \u2014 about a transgender Mexican cartel boss who seeks gender-affirming care to transition physically into a woman \u2014 had already been brewing on several fronts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The film was received negatively by many <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/28\/world\/americas\/emilia-perez-mexico-oscars.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">viewers in Mexico<\/a>, who thought that the film\u2019s French director, Jacques Audiard, made light of or even glamorized the country\u2019s drug-related violence. And despite being set in Mexico, \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d was filmed almost entirely on soundstages in France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement issued in November, GLAAD, one of the most powerful L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy organizations, said \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d was \u201ca profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman\u201d and \u201ca step backward for trans representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gasc\u00f3n has skipped recent awards ceremonies, including Critics Choice, Directors Guild and Producers Guild. But she is expected to attend the Oscars, though it\u2019s unclear if she will walk the red carpet or sit with the cast and crew of the film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<p><h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2f131e8b\">Is It Finally Demi Moore\u2019s Moment?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Demi Moore <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/05\/movies\/demi-moore-golden-globes-the-substance.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">accepted her Golden Globe<\/a> for best actress in a musical or comedy in January \u2014 for her role <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/11\/movies\/demi-moore-substance-oscars.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">as Elisabeth Sparkle<\/a>, a fading star who goes to gruesome lengths to stay relevant in the body horror film \u201cThe Substance\u201d \u2014 she made a moving statement about her Hollywood trajectory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI had a woman say to me, just know, you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd so today I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The win solidified the star\u2019s comeback and the message helped the actress, who has more name recognition among American audiences than many nominees, stand out in an exceedingly competitive awards season for best actress nominees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the Oscars, Moore, 62, is up against Mikey Madison, 25, the star of \u201cAnora,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/16\/movies\/baftas-winners-conclave-brutalist.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">who bested Moore<\/a> at the BAFTAs in mid-February; Fernanda Torres, of \u201cI\u2019m Still Here,\u201d who won the best actress in a drama Golden Globe; Cynthia Erivo, the \u201cWicked\u201d star who made viral magic with her co-star Ariana Grande on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/06\/arts\/music\/wicked-movie-popcast-ariana-grande.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">their press tour<\/a>; and Gasc\u00f3n from \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Also working in Moore\u2019s favor: At the Screen Actors Guild Awards last weekend, she triumphed over Madison, Erivo and Gasc\u00f3n (Torres was not nominated).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<p><h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-731ed4a\">\u2018No Other Land\u2019 Still Has No U.S. Distributor<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Normally American studios scramble to snap up buzzy films and documentaries, particular those that have had successful festival runs, in the hopes of boosting their Oscar-nomination totals. But <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/18\/movies\/no-other-land-documentaries-distribution.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">so far<\/a>, no American distributor will touch \u201cNo Other Land\u201d even though it won the top documentary award and the audience award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2024 and dozens of awards from critics, juries and audiences across the world since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The movie, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/31\/movies\/no-other-land-documentary-gaza-west-bank.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">our critic called<\/a> \u201caudacious and devastating,\u201d is about the Israeli government\u2019s efforts to demolish homes and expel families in the community of Masafer Yatta in the southern West Bank, claiming the area is needed for a military training ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Its filmmaking team is made up of two Palestinians, Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal, and two Israelis, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. The movie documents the period between 2019 and 2023, and includes archival footage from Adra\u2019s family, who are from Masafer Yatta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Producers eventually opted to self-distribute the film, landing it in about two-dozen U.S. theaters with more underway thanks to a strong box office. Still, the filmmakers hope a U.S. distributor will help their film reach more viewers, potentially via a streamer like Netflix or Max.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s clear that there are political reasons at play here that are affecting it,\u201d Abraham <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/19\/movies\/no-other-land-oscars.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told The New York Times<\/a> in a February video interview he did alongside Adra, from Adra\u2019s Masafer Yatta home. \u201cI\u2019m hoping that at a certain point the demand for the film will become so clear and indisputable that there will be a distributor with the kind of courage to take it on and show it to the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s certainly plausible that an Oscars win might just be that needed nudge.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-43bef72c\">Cynthia Erivo Could Clinch an EGOT<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cynthia Erivo is hoping to join an exclusive circle on Sunday night: <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/egot-winners-history.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the EGOT club<\/a>, an acronym for those who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She is nominated in the best actress category for her turn as the green-hued heroine Elphaba in \u201cWicked,\u201d the first of a two-part adaptation of the Broadway musical inspired by the story of the Wizard of Oz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If Erivo wins, she would become not only the 22nd person with an EGOT earned in competitive categories (meaning none of the awards were honorary) but also the youngest person to ever achieve this status, at the age of 38. A few previous winners secured their EGOTs at age 39, including Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who did so last year with an Emmy win for a song they wrote for the Hulu comedy \u201cOnly Murders in the Building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Erivo won her Tony in 2016, for best actress in a musical for her role as Celie in \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d; her Grammy in 2017 for the cast album for that musical; and her daytime Emmy in 2017 for a performance by the cast of \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d on the<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>\u201cToday\u201d show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<p><h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-75b48431\">Despite Wildfires, the Show Is on Track<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As wildfires devastated large swaths of Los Angeles in January, it seemed possible that the Oscars ceremony might need to be delayed. After all, the nominations were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/13\/movies\/oscar-nominations-fires.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">twice postponed<\/a> because of the fires. And the annual Oscars luncheon, which was set to be held on Feb. 10, was canceled entirely; it had only been canceled once before \u2014 in 2021, because of the pandemic \u2014 since the event began in 1982.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But on Sunday night at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the show will go on as scheduled, and it can be expected that the fires will be a focus of the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a letter sent to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in January, Bill Kramer, the Academy\u2019s chief executive, and Janet Yang, its president, said: \u201cWe will honor Los Angeles as the city of dreams, showcasing its beauty and resilience, as well as its role as a beacon for filmmakers and creative visionaries for over a century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The letter from Kramer and Yang specified that this year\u2019s ceremony would \u201cacknowledge those who fought so bravely against the wildfires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Oscars ceremony has never been outright canceled, but has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/09\/movies\/la-fires-oscars-awards-season.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">postponed a handful of times<\/a>: first in 1938, because of flooding in Los Angeles; in 1968, after the assassination of the Rev.
