He was 67.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His agent, Christy Clark, confirmed the death. His family said in a statement that Mr. Lowe had a challenging recovery after undergoing elective heart surgery in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSpace Ghost: Coast to Coast\u201d was the first fully original program for Cartoon Network and the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/02\/arts\/television\/adult-swim-history-anniversary.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">spark that led to the creation of Adult Swim<\/a>, the network\u2019s late-night programming block. The show, which ran for 11 seasons from 1994 until 2012, reimagined Space Ghost, the title character from a 1960s Hanna-Barbera superhero cartoon, as a temperamental talk show host, in a new format that mixed animation and live action.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Thanks to an enviable lineup of guests \u2014 Weird Al Yankovic, Beck and Sarah Jessica Parker were among the celebrities who made appearances \u2014 and decidedly off-the-wall interview questions (\u201cAre you getting enough oxygen?\u201d Space Ghost once asked Hulk Hogan), the show became a cult favorite among teenagers and young adults, helping launch Adult Swim into the stratosphere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the heart of it all was Mr. Lowe. Dave Willis, a writer and producer on the show, said Mr. Lowe had a \u201cbig, booming movie-trailer voice\u201d and approached the role like the morning drive-time D.J. he had been before he got into voice work. His relatable and highly entertaining kvetching, Mr. Willis said, helped shape Space Ghost\u2019s new persona.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe would just turn on the mic the second he entered the room,\u201d Mr. Willis said. \u201cOver time, the character took on certain aspects of George in a way that really made the show work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Produced on a minimal budget, the show featured interviews with celebrity guests, which were conducted over speaker phone. The guests <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/11\/20\/arts\/television-and-now-here-s-ummm-space-ghost.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">would hear the questions through an earpiece<\/a> as they were videotaped in whatever Turner-controlled television studio could be found \u2014 or, in one case, Willie Nelson\u2019s tour bus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Their images would then be superimposed on an animated television monitor beside Space Ghost\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Space Ghost\u2019s dialogue was written and recorded after the interviews were conducted, meaning that \u2014 by design \u2014 the answers did not always exactly match the questions, to humorous effect. (\u201cAny advice for us?\u201d Space Ghost once asked his fellow talk-show host Joe Franklin. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to be important, but more important to be nice,\u201d Mr. Franklin said. \u201cGive us something we can use,\u201d Space Ghost replied.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some guests were confused by the unconventional questions, while others played along. (After Paul Westerberg, the former lead singer and guitarist for the Replacements, who had never seen the show, walked out, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/02\/arts\/television\/adult-swim-history-anniversary.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mr. Willis told The New York Times in 2021<\/a>, they began asking guests to sign a waiver before they were interviewed.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">George Lowe was born in Dunedin, Fla., on Nov. 10, 1957. He moved to Atlanta in the late 1980s and joined the \u201cBreakfast Club\u201d morning show on Power 99, a Top 40 station, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/obituaries\/george-lowe-known-as-adult-swims-space-ghost-has-died\/46XSMMM2LVGSLJ3V47MJNT27AA\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported<\/a>. He went on to do voice-over work for 99X, the alternative rock station that replaced Power 99, and also lent his voice to hundreds of radio commercials and television promos, The Journal-Constitution reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Information about his survivors was not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Lowe loved creating abstract art, Mr. Willis said \u2014 several of his drawings <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.escapeintolife.com\/artist-watch\/george-lowe\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are in the permanent collection of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta<\/a> \u2014 and collecting prints by Pop artists including Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg and James Rosenquist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over a career that lasted more than three decades, Mr. Lowe supplied the voices for a number of characters on other Adult Swim shows, including \u201cRobot Chicken,\u201d \u201cThe Brak Show,\u201d \u201cSquidbillies,\u201d \u201cSealab 2021\u201d and \u201cAqua Teen Hunger Force.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Lowe was most closely associated with Space Ghost, and was known to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rockinpins\/reel\/DGyn_VfyrPc\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dress in full costume to promote the talk show<\/a>. He voiced the character until the series finale in 2012, and he reprised the role last year in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zyKRIAwqXVg\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSpace Con\u201d episode<\/a> of the Max animated series \u201cJellystone!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Michael Hannigan, a producer on \u201cSpace Ghost: Coast to Coast\u201d who also directed <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adultswim.com\/videos\/specials\/lowe-country\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a short documentary on Mr. Lowe called \u201cLowe Country<\/a>,\u201d said that Mr. Lowe was the show\u2019s secret sauce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSome people would say one of the hardest things about building a fictional character is imparting humanity,\u201d he said. \u201cFortunately, we could just kind of steal that from George, because George was the human side of Space Ghost, warts and all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Earlier this week, Mr. Willis took a look back at five of Mr. Lowe\u2019s most memorable \u201cSpace Ghost\u201d episodes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">Sept. 23, 1994<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-79eba713\">Weird Al Yankovic and Schoolly D<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Weird Al Yankovic outlines his superpowers, which include that he can \u201ceat my own weight in Ding Dongs, I can turn red traffic lights green just by staring at them and I can do an oil painting with my butt.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s enough to get you on this show,\u201d Space Ghost responds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">Oct. 17, 1997<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-dc6c9a1\">Pavement, Goldie Hawn and Tommy Davidson<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Space Ghost mistakes the indie rock band Pavement for the Beatles and then tries to interview Goldie Hawn while they play a song whose lyrics consist only of \u201cSpace Ghost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTheir drummer, Steve West, just kind of implicitly understood how we made the show,\u201d Mr. Willis said. \u201cHe gave me a long list of replies that I could use anywhere. He very flatly said things like: \u2018Yes. No. I like this. This is good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">Nov. 7, 1997<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5b38ddd4\">Rob Zombie and Raven-Symon\u00e9<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The wrestler <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/21\/sports\/randy-savage-58-pro-wrestlings-macho-man-dies.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Randy Savage<\/a> steals the show as Space Ghost\u2019s grandfather, Leonard Ghostal (picture Space Ghost, plus a white beard). He vows to follow it home and \u201ckill its whole family,\u201d sparking an 11-minute-long sequence of Space Ghost slowly flying behind it while muttering to himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s the most tedious, campy television test of a viewer\u2019s patience,\u201d Mr. Willis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">Dec. 7, 2001<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-16b0295e\">Willie Nelson<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Space Ghost has fallen on hard times, and his show has been sold to a \u201cfailing liquor chain\u201d \u2014 its mascot is \u201cOld Kentucky Shark\u201d \u2014 to make ends meet.
