{"id":45536,"date":"2025-03-10T03:52:31","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T07:52:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/romania-bars-ultranationalist-candidate-from-presidential-race\/10\/03\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-03-10T03:52:31","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T07:52:31","slug":"romania-bars-ultranationalist-candidate-from-presidential-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/romania-bars-ultranationalist-candidate-from-presidential-race\/10\/03\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Romania Bars Ultranationalist Candidate From Presidential Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Calin Georgescu, an ultranationalist candidate who won the first round of Romania\u2019s abruptly aborted presidential election last year, has been barred from competing in a do-over vote scheduled for May, sparking a small but violent protest by his supporters in Bucharest, the Romanian capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Central Electoral Bureau issued a statement late Sunday saying that it had ruled against registering the candidacy of Mr. Georgescu, an outspoken critic of Ukraine and NATO who has voiced sympathy for Russia and Romania\u2019s fascist leadership during World War II. The bureau also said it had rejected three other would-be candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It gave no explanation for the decision, which came less than two weeks after Romanian prosecutors <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/27\/world\/europe\/romania-calin-georgescu.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">opened a criminal case<\/a> against Mr. Georgescu for \u201cincitement to actions against the constitutional order,\u201d the \u201ccommunication of false information\u201d and involvement in the establishment of an organization \u201cwith a fascist, racist or xenophobic character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several hundred angry protesters gathered Sunday evening outside the election bureau in Bucharest, screaming \u201cthieves\u201d and \u201ctraitors,\u201d and hurling stones and firecrackers at police officers, who responded with volleys of tear gas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The protest was far smaller than previous street demonstrations by Mr. Georgescu\u2019s supporters but it raised political tensions and fears of violence ahead of the country\u2019s second attempt at a presidential election. The crowd later dispersed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Romanian president has limited powers but has often played an important role in the foreign policy of the NATO-member country, which borders Ukraine and has a large air base near the Black Sea that is used by the U.S. military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Georgescu, who has the right to appeal his exclusion, denounced the electoral bureau\u2019s decision as a \u201canother direct blow to the heart of democracy around the world.\u201d He said: \u201cEurope is now a dictatorship. Romania is under tyranny.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Georgescu stunned the country in November by winning the first round of the original election. Romania\u2019s political establishment had viewed him as a fringe candidate who posed no serious challenge to more mainstream candidates and a prominent far-right nationalist, George Simion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Georgescu, who claims to have spent \u201czero\u201d on his campaign, was largely unknown to most Romanians until a flood of videos supporting him mysteriously appeared on social media in the final days of the campaign, a phenomenon that his opponents ascribed to Russian interference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Constitutional Court, saying that it wanted \u201cto ensure the correctness and legality of the electoral process,\u201d annulled his first-round win two days before a December runoff.
