A video shared on X claims to show hungry Nigerians scrambling for free bread, causing a bakery\u2019s roof to collapse as the crowd climbed onto it. However, this is false. The video was filmed in India during a Muslim procession in July 2024. <\/h3>\n
\u201cPeople climbed on the roof of the bakery just to beg for bread and they ended up destroying the building,\u201d reads part of an\u00a0X post<\/a> published on February 25, 2025.<\/p>\n Screenshot showing the false post, taken March 7, 2025<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Shared more than 900 times, the post includes a 17-second video clip showing more than a dozen people falling from a building\u2019s roof as it collapses above a large crowd thronging the street below.<\/p>\n The caption suggests the clip was filmed outside a bakery in Nigeria\u2019s Ogun state during a free bread handout.<\/p>\n Millions of Nigerians are struggling with deepening poverty, forcing many to rely on food aid and charity to survive.<\/p>\n In December 2024, dozens died<\/a> after stampedes marred food and charity distributions across the country (archived\u00a0here<\/a>).<\/p>\n However, the video of the collapsing roof is unrelated to Nigeria.<\/p>\n By listening closely to the sound in the video, AFP Fact Check detected people in the crowd yelling \u201cOh teri!\u201d multiple times.<\/p>\n The phrase, according to our correspondents in India, is an informal Hindi slang<\/a> expression that conveys shock, surprise, or disbelief (archived here<\/a>).<\/p>\n Using Google Lens to conduct reverse image searches<\/a> on keyframes in the video, AFP Fact Check found a clip<\/a> showing the same scene \u2014 but shot from a different angle (archived here<\/a>).<\/p>\n It was published on an Instagram page called \u201cbellarymerijaan\u201d on July 18, 2024.<\/p>\n Bellary (or Ballari) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka.<\/p>\n According to the Instagram video\u2019s caption, it shows an incident that \u201coccurred during the farewell of Server Hussain in Bellary\u201d, adding that \u201cmany injuries were reported\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cSome people have broken their legs, and one person’s head was damaged.
