Staying married can be tough, especially for Navy SEALs, but Jason and Erica Redman are defying the odds with their long-lasting marriage of nearly 24 years<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n “I mean, even to this day we often joke with each other like, \u2018Hey, is it too late to run?\u2019 \u201d quips Jason<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Now the couple are sharing tips and strategies in their new book Mission: Invincible Marriage<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Jason and Erica Redman are ready to share their secrets to lasting love.<\/p>\n The retired Navy SEAL and his wife \u2014 who have been married for nearly 24 years and are parents to three adult children \u2014 claim they don\u2019t have the perfect union, but that some simple ground rules have helped them weather turbulent times, including a life-altering injury he experienced while serving in Iraq.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen Erica and I got together, I said, \u2018Hey, this is a really hard job. I’m going to be gone all the time. It’s dangerous. Sometimes, I won’t be able to tell you where I am. Oftentimes, I’m going to miss holidays,\u2019 \u201c Jason, a 49-year-old Purple Heart recipient, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.<\/p>\n What’s more, he says he even quipped that “really what you should do is run.”<\/p>\n “That began the ongoing joke throughout our entire marriage,” he adds. “I mean, even to this day we often joke with each other like, \u2018Hey, is it too late to run?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n Instead, the couple have found that being outspoken and communicating \u2014 as well as having a sense of humor \u2014 has been the key to staying together, despite a reportedly high divorce rate<\/a> among Navy SEAL couples.<\/p>\n Related: After Months Away, Military Dad Comes Home to Reunite with Wife and 3 Sons: ‘Really Special’ (Exclusive)<\/a><\/p>\n Erica, 47, tells PEOPLE that the lessons they’ve learned over the years seem so simple \u2014 but, she adds, “I think it’s simple things that people mess up all the time.”<\/p>\n In their new book, Mission: Invincible Marriage<\/em>, the Redmans are sharing all their tips for having a strong and enduring relationship.<\/p>\n When it comes to relationships, instead of having adversarial interactions \u2014 where one person is always \u201cright\u201d in the relationship \u2014\u00a0couples should view themselves as a unit.<\/p>\n \u201cYour spouse should be your most important teammate,\u201d Jason says, but cautious that \u201cdoesn’t mean that you can’t have your own goals and dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n Never miss a story \u2014 sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter<\/a> to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer\u200b\u200b, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n In 2007, while serving in Fallujah, Jason\u2019s own future took an uncertain turn when he was struck by machine gun fire. Shot seven times in the face and arms, the soldier recovered at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he underwent upwards of 30 surgeries.<\/p>\n He also hung a sign outside his room, cautioning those who entered to check their pity at the door.<\/p>\n \u201cAttention to all who enter here. If you are coming into this room with sorrow or to feel sorry for my wounds, go elsewhere,\u201d read the sign. \u201cThe wounds I received I got in a job I love, doing it for people I love, supporting the freedom of a country I deeply love. And then as you get married and time goes by, you mature and that becomes a different version of yourself. And 10 years after that, you’re at a different version.”<\/p>\n Although as they’ve both matured and changed \u2014 becoming “different people” with “different dreams”\u00a0\u2014 there’s one essential thing that’s remained consistent: their “friendship and love for each other.”<\/p>\n That, he adds, “has stayed the same.”<\/p>\n Read the original article on People<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
