{"id":45866,"date":"2025-03-13T23:25:57","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T03:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/florida-mayor-threatens-cinema-over-israeli-palestinian-film\/13\/03\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T23:25:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T03:25:57","slug":"florida-mayor-threatens-cinema-over-israeli-palestinian-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/florida-mayor-threatens-cinema-over-israeli-palestinian-film\/13\/03\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida Mayor Threatens Cinema Over Israeli-Palestinian Film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The mayor of Miami Beach is seeking to oust a nonprofit art house cinema from a city-owned property for showing \u201cNo Other Land,\u201d the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/02\/movies\/no-other-land-oscars-documentary.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Oscar-winning<\/a> documentary that chronicles the Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes in Masafer Yatta in the southern West Bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The mayor, Steven Meiner, introduced <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/f9a60e807476fd2a281bcce6f\/files\/22d72403-a176-d610-8a27-bde4f59ea835\/2025_03_19_Reso_TERMINATE_O_CINEMA_LEASE_AND_GRANTS.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a resolution<\/a> to revoke the lease under which O Cinema rents the space, he announced in a newsletter <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/stevenmeiner.com\/saferseasonmb\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this week<\/a>. He described the film as \u201ca false, one-sided propaganda attack on the Jewish people that is not consistent with the values of our city and residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kareem Tabsch, the co-founder of O Cinema, said that the threat of losing its physical location in Miami Beach was \u201cvery grave and we take it very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAt the time, we take very seriously our responsibility as a cultural organization that presents works that are engaging and thought provoking and that foster dialogue,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we take very seriously our responsibility to do that without interference of government.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, which is now co-counsel for the theater, criticized the mayor\u2019s move, as did the makers of the film, which won the Academy Award for best documentary earlier this month but has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/18\/movies\/no-other-land-documentaries-distribution.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">not been acquired in the United States by a traditional distributor<\/a> for either a theatrical or streaming release. Distributors in two dozen other countries had picked up the film even before it won the award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Daniel Tilley, the legal director of the Florida branch of the ACLU, said in an interview that \u201cwhat\u2019s at stake is the government\u2019s ability to use unchecked power to punish those who dare to express views that the government disagrees with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The city commission, he said, could choose to \u201cmove forward with a blatantly unconstitutional resolution and face the consequences of that or let cooler heads prevail and do the right thing by acknowledging that funding a theater means funding an environment of artistic freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The film was made by two Israeli and two Palestinian filmmakers. Its fate reflects the commercial struggles documentaries face and the polarizing politics that surround the subject of this one. The filmmakers are, in effect, distributing the movie themselves at several dozen theaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist who appears often in the film and is one of its four credited directors, condemned the mayor\u2019s action and took issue with his description of the film as \u201cegregiously antisemitic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen the mayor uses the word antisemitism to silence Palestinians and Israelis who proudly oppose occupation and apartheid together, fighting for justice and equality, he is emptying it out of meaning,\u201d Mr. Abraham said in an email. He added: \u201cI believe that once you see the harsh reality of occupation in Masafer Yatta in the West Bank, it becomes impossible to justify it, and that\u2019s why the mayor is so afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Meiner said in his newsletter that Vivian Marthell, the chief executive of O Cinema, had initially responded to his complaints about the film by agreeing to withdraw the film, but that the theater then changed its mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Tabsch, a documentary filmmaker who also sits on the cinema\u2019s board of directors, said that the original response from Ms. Marthell had been made in a \u201cmoment of duress\u201d given that the mayor\u2019s complaints were viewed as \u201cveiled threats about the future of O Cinema in Miami Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But after conversations with theater staff, the board of directors and other local arts leaders, he said that it became clear \u201cthat was not the right course of action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat our community told us overwhelmingly is that they wanted to see this film,\u201d he said, adding that he hoped that an \u201camicable solution\u201d could be reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a lengthy statement shared Thursday evening by Mr. Tabsch, Ms. Marthell echoed his characterization of having felt under duress and said her change in position came \u201cafter reflecting on the broader implications for free speech and O Cinema\u2019s mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOur decision to screen \u2018No Other Land\u2019 is not a declaration of political alignment,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is a bold reaffirmation of our fundamental belief that every voice deserves to be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The resolution, if it is passed, would allow the city manager to terminate the lease and seek a tenant \u201cthat more accurately reflects the city\u2019s values and\/or interests in promoting a safe and inclusive environment for residents and visitors.\u201d It would also revoke tens of thousands of dollars in grant funding that have not yet been paid to O Cinema.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Meiner was first elected to the nonpartisan mayoral position in November 2023. He did not respond to multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The resolution appeared to be scheduled for the next city commission meeting on Wednesday. It was unclear whether it would pass, though one commissioner, Tanya Katzoff Bhatt, said in an interview that she would oppose the resolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Bhatt said she saw the film solely because of the debate and described it as \u201cvery difficult\u201d viewing. She said she had grappled with her response to what it showed, but added, \u201cThere are other ways to handle difficult discussions than to punish people who are trying to provide a forum to have them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Another commissioner, David Suarez, said it was \u201ctoo soon to say\u201d how he would vote.
