\u201cWe all discovered what a powerful vehicle it is to have her singing these songs, and to calm the flurries of notes down a little bit,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s there and it\u2019s hiding, bubbling underneath, ready to come out and gobble up everything at any point. But another thing about it is knowing that you can do that \u2014 but not doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Douglas \u2014 whose dobro and steel guitar often answer Krauss\u2019s voice with keening, sighing alternate melodies \u2014 has long been a first-call Nashville studio musician, bandleader, collaborator and producer. Among his recent projects are \u201cThe Set,\u201d his 2024 album as a leader; recording with Celtic musicians in Scotland for the Transatlantic Sessions series<\/a>; and producing an upcoming album for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.<\/p>\n The other Union Station members also stayed active between albums. Krauss released \u201cWindy City,\u201d a more mainstream country album, in 2017, and in 2021 she and Led Zeppelin\u2019s Robert Plant released their second duet album, \u201cRaise the Roof,\u201d followed by a tour. (Their first album, \u201cRaising Sand,\u201d won the Grammy for album of the year in 2009.) Bales and Block toured with Krauss for \u201cWindy City,\u201d played studio sessions, wrote songs and released instructional videos.<\/p>\n \u201cEverybody\u2019s always gone and done their own thing and had a very busy career outside of this band,\u201d Krauss said. \u201cWhen we come back together, we\u2019ve lived all these other places, and it just makes it stronger. I\u2019ve always felt like, you know, life sounds good on people.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cArcadia\u201d marks a major lineup change in Union Station. For three decades, Dan Tyminski traded off lead vocals with Krauss, providing a grainy, rough-hewed contrast to the delicacy of her voice. He won Grammy Awards with Union Station and on his own, notably for \u201cMan of Constant Sorrow\u201d<\/a> from the 2000 Coen Brothers movie \u201cO Brother, Where Art Thou?\u201d<\/p>\n During the sessions for \u201cArcadia,\u201d Tyminski decided he wanted to continue his solo career instead of joining Union Station on tour this year. \u201cNobody wanted Dan to go,\u201d Douglas said. \u201cBut Dan\u2019s got a thing he\u2019s got to go do, and we all respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
