{"id":46451,"date":"2025-03-24T11:43:42","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T15:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/avannaata-qimussersua-greenlands-main-dog-sledding-race-finds-an-uncomfortable-spotlight\/24\/03\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-03-24T11:43:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T15:43:42","slug":"avannaata-qimussersua-greenlands-main-dog-sledding-race-finds-an-uncomfortable-spotlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/avannaata-qimussersua-greenlands-main-dog-sledding-race-finds-an-uncomfortable-spotlight\/24\/03\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Avannaata Qimussersua, Greenland\u2019s Main Dog Sledding Race, Finds an Uncomfortable Spotlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During Usha Vance\u2019s planned visit to Greenland this week, the second lady and one of her sons will attend one of the world\u2019s most foremost dog sledding events, called the Avannaata Qimussersua, according to the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The visit, which comes amid the backdrop of President Trump\u2019s vow to make Greenland part of the United States, has catapulted the dog sledding event into the global spotlight, and organizers of the competition <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/24\/world\/europe\/trump-greenland-us.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">do not seem<\/a> happy about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe did not invite them,\u201d the organizers of the race said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kalaallitnunaanniqimussertartutkattuffiat?locale=da_DK\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a> on Sunday, referring to Ms. Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, and their son, adding that \u201cthey may attend as spectators\u201d because the event is open to the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Avannaata Qimussersua, which translates to \u201cThe Great Race of the North,\u201d is an unlikely venue for geopolitical tension.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It started in 1988 and is in effect Greenland\u2019s national championship in the sport. The annual event is a roughly 26-mile race across ice and snow that brings the toughest mushers \u2014 also known as dog sled drivers \u2014 and the hardiest dogs together on some of the most punishing terrain imaginable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dog sledders spend years raising and training their huskies for a competition that Greenlanders cherish as a high point of their Arctic culture. Organizers call it \u201ca challenging event that highlights the bond between humans and their dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The 2025 edition takes place on Sunday in Sisimiut, on the west coast of Greenland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Greenland is home to the Arctic\u2019s largest remaining sled dog population and has a long tradition of dog sled culture. More recently, the sport has been under threat <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/19\/sports\/arctic-sports-climate-change.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">by a warming climate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The race consists of about 37 mushers and 444 dogs from across Greenland. Each team is made up of 10 to 14 dogs. Sleds must be of traditional Greenlandic design and cannot include foreign components such as ski runners or plastic parts, according to the official rules.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For Greenlanders, dog sledding is more than just a sport.
