{"id":46503,"date":"2025-03-25T10:27:37","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:27:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/online-harm-gangs-pose-unprecedented-risk-to-teens-says-u-k-crime-agency\/25\/03\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-03-25T10:27:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:27:37","slug":"online-harm-gangs-pose-unprecedented-risk-to-teens-says-u-k-crime-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/online-harm-gangs-pose-unprecedented-risk-to-teens-says-u-k-crime-agency\/25\/03\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Online Harm Gangs Pose \u2018Unprecedented Risk\u2019 to Teens, Says U.K. Crime Agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Britain\u2019s National Crime Agency has warned of an \u201cunprecedented risk\u201d to young people from online groups that encourage teenagers to share sadistic and misogynistic material and to coerce others into sexual abuse, self-harm or violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The agency, which is responsible for combating serious and organized crime in Britain, said Tuesday in an annual assessment of crime trends that reports of incidents related to the threat from online groups increased sixfold between 2022 and 2024 in Britain and warned of significant numbers of victims being groomed or blackmailed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYoung people are being drawn into these sadistic and violent online gangs, where they are collaborating at scale to inflict, or incite others to commit, serious harm,\u201d said Graeme Biggar, director general of the agency, in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk\/news\/sadistic-online-harm-groups-putting-people-at-unprecedented-risk-warns-the-nca\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-1189og3 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">Graeme Biggar, director general of Britain\u2019s National Crime Agency.<\/span><span class=\"css-14fe1uy e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"css-1ly73wi e1tej78p0\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Liam McBurney\/PA Images, via Getty Images<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He added, \u201cThese groups are not lurking on the dark web, they exist in the same online world and platforms young people use on a daily basis,\u201d and noted that young girls were being \u201cgroomed into hurting themselves and in some cases, even encouraged to attempt suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The agency\u2019s National Strategic Assessment for 2024 said that while adults were involved in these communities or networks, it was especially concerned about teenage boys often sharing sadistic and misogynistic material and targeting girls as young as 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Described as \u201cCom\u201d networks, the forums have become vehicles for sharing images of extreme violence, gore and child sexual abuse. They are also used to apply \u201cextreme coercion\u201d to manipulate young people into harming or abusing themselves, their siblings or pets, the agency said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMembers of \u2018Com\u2019 networks are usually young men who are motivated by status, power, control, misogyny, sexual gratification, or an obsession with extreme or violent material,\u201d said the report, which added that the emergence of these types of online groups \u201care almost certainly causing some individuals, especially younger people, to develop a dangerous propensity for extreme violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It added that the networks typically attract young males promoting nihilistic views, who \u201cattempt to gain status with other users by committing or encouraging harmful acts across a broad spectrum of offending.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Users in Britain and other western countries \u201chad exchanged millions of messages online relating to sexual and physical abuse,\u201d it noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The crime agency gave the example of Cameron Finnigan, a British teenager who was sentenced to jail in January after being part of an online Satanist group that blackmails other children into filming or livestreaming self-harm, violence and sexual abuse. Mr. Finnigan, 19, used the Telegram app to encourage contacts to commit murder and suicide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In his statement, Mr. Biggar said that police were collaborating with technology companies and psychologists to better understand the behavior of young people but added that he encouraged parents \u201cto have regular conversations with their child about what they do online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jess Phillips, a government minister who has responsibility for tackling violence against women and girls, described the scale of abuse outlined in the report as \u201cabsolutely horrific,\u201d and also urged open conversations within families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy message to tech companies is simple: This is your responsibility, too,\u201d she added. \u201cYou must ensure your platforms are safe for children, so that we can protect the most vulnerable and put predators behind bars.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The agency\u2019s latest survey focused heavily on the use of technology and online platforms in crimes including fraud, extremism and sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Citing statistics from the Internet Watch Foundation, a nonprofit organization, it said that 291,273 web pages had contained indecent images of children in 2024, a 6 percent increase since 2023.
