Markets in Asia, Europe and the U.S. wobbled yesterday as many automakers\u2019 share prices fell. Trump has threatened to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/world\/europe\/trump-tariff-threat-canada-eu.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">target the E.U. and Canada<\/a> if they band together to retaliate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tariffs on all cars, and some auto parts, exported to the U.S. are set to take effect next Thursday. Mexico, Japan, South Korea and Canada account for about 75 percent of U.S. vehicle imports. Here\u2019s how major car companies <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/business\/trump-auto-tariffs-car-brands.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">will be affected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tariffs put Trump\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/us\/politics\/trump-car-tariffs-trade-strategy.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">unorthodox trade theory to the test<\/a>. To the president, tariffs encourage companies to move factories to the U.S., creating more American jobs. Economists say their effects are more complicated and that they could cause significant collateral damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Reactions:<\/strong> Mark Carney, Canada\u2019s leader, said the U.S. was \u201cno longer a reliable partner\u201d and that his country would announce retaliatory tariffs next week. In Germany, whose auto industry is a huge exporter to the U.S., the economy minister, Robert Habeck, said it was \u201ccrucial that the E.U. delivers a decisive response to the tariffs,\u201d adding, \u201cIt must be clear that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/business\/germany-trump-auto-tariffs.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">we will not back down<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7117e583\">A murky vision of a postwar Ukraine<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">European leaders in Paris yesterday discussed a French proposal to send a \u201creassurance force\u201d to help safeguard an eventual peace in Ukraine. But Emmanuel Macron, France\u2019s leader, said the specifics of such a force were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/world\/europe\/european-leaders-ukraine-support.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">still being ironed out<\/a>.
