Wonderful!\u201d Mr. Mathis has been singing standards and soft rock since his teenage years, but he started touring professionally after his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/johnnymathis.com\/wp2\/index.php\/project\/johnny-mathis-1956\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debut album<\/a> was released in 1956.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Mathis, 89, will pick up the microphone for shows in April and May, but his concerts scheduled for the summer and fall have been canceled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s with sincere regret that due to Mr. Mathis\u2019s age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts,\u201d a statement <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/johnnymathis.com\/wp2\/index.php\/news-2\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> on his website said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Mathis\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bergenpac.org\/events\/detail\/johnny-mathis-the-voice-of-romance-tour\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">final concert<\/a> is scheduled for May 18 at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, N.J. The other concerts are April 10 in Shippensburg, Pa.; April 26 in Shipshewana, Ind.; and May 10 in Santa Rosa, Calif.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some tickets remain available for his final concerts, his website noted, and refunds will be issued for the ones that were canceled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Mathis grew up in San Francisco, where in 1955 he got a job singing on the weekends at a club. Its <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/12\/19\/arts\/a-timeless-reminder-of-back-seats-in-57-buicks.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">owner<\/a> eventually persuaded George Avakian, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/22\/obituaries\/george-avakian-dead-record-producer-and-talent-scout.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">record producer and talent scout<\/a> with Columbia Records, to see him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After he listened to Mr. Mathis sing, Mr. Avakian sent a telegram to Columbia that read, \u201cHave found phenomenal 19 year old boy who could go all the way. Send blank contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Mathis is widely recognized as a pioneer of the romantic ballad style that emerged in the 1950s as a pop-music alternative to high-energy rock \u2019n\u2019 roll. Mr. Mathis would go on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1977\/04\/03\/archives\/pop-mainstream-johnny-mathis.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">to make<\/a> more top-selling albums than any other modern pop performer except Frank Sinatra, by the end of the 1970s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Forty years ago this month, the critic Stephen Holden <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1985\/03\/17\/arts\/music-noted-in-brief-johnny-mathis-and-dionne-warwick.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">wrote in The New York Times<\/a> that \u201cJohnny Mathis is still the most compelling exponent of a time-honored crooning tradition carried forward in recent years by the Bee Gees, George Benson, Al Jarreau and Julio Iglesias.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Holden noted in his review of a concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York that while Mr. Mathis\u2019s \u201cethereal, androgynous tenor, with its built-in sob and breathy hesitations, has darkened perceptibly, it communicates the same aura of adolescent longing that it did in 1957.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2003, Mr. Mathis received the Grammys\u2019 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/02\/24\/arts\/newcomer-has-a-big-night-at-grammy-awards-ceremony.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lifetime achievement award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At his peak, he was booking some 200 concert dates a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe road is my home,\u201d he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/12\/19\/arts\/a-timeless-reminder-of-back-seats-in-57-buicks.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">once said<\/a>. \u201cI carry my best friends with me. We work together, play together. I have no other life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But midway through his career, Mr. Mathis admitted that he was uncomfortable onstage. \u201cI hate it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s something I\u2019ll have to do all my life.
