{"id":46925,"date":"2025-04-01T13:29:36","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T17:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/fisher-center-at-bard-announces-civis-hope-commissions\/01\/04\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T13:29:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T17:29:36","slug":"fisher-center-at-bard-announces-civis-hope-commissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/fisher-center-at-bard-announces-civis-hope-commissions\/01\/04\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Fisher Center at Bard Announces Civis Hope Commissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hope may seem daring in this age of angst and uncertainty, but it is at the heart of three major new works coming to the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/fishercenter.bard.edu\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fisher Center at Bard<\/a>, including a musical adaptation of \u201cYentl the Yeshiva Boy,\u201d the performing arts center announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With a $2.5 million gift from the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/civis.org\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Civis Foundation<\/a>, matched by Bard College for an initial endowment of $5 million, the Fisher Center said it would create the Civis Hope Commissions, a program to support \u201ccontemporary artists who will examine, interrogate and transform American artifacts, archival materials or artworks from the past to imagine a more perfect, just and hopeful future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/05\/theater\/fisher-center-at-bard-college-arts-incubator.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gideon Lester<\/a>, the Fisher Center\u2019s artistic director and chief executive, described the program in an interview as \u201ca rallying cry for the possibility of art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cArt can describe things as they might be,\u201d he said, \u201cand see things not only as they are framed by the current news cycle. Great art has the ability to shift our consciousness and show us what we might become if we were really inhabiting our best selves. That\u2019s what these commissions are really about.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Civis Hope Commissions are intended to continue in perpetuity, but the Fisher Center announced three projects to start: \u201cJubilee,\u201d a new musical with a libretto by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, based on Scott Joplin\u2019s opera \u201cTreemonisha\u201d; Courtney Bryan\u2019s first opera, an adaptation of Tennessee Williams\u2019s \u201cSuddenly Last Summer\u201d; and the \u201cYentl\u201d musical, which will be the celebrated director Barrie Kosky\u2019s first project developed in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These commissions had already been in the works at the Fisher Center, but were chosen for the Civis program because they fit its mandate, Lester said, adding that working under the Civis umbrella allowed him and the artists \u201can opportunity to think about them in a new way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cJubilee,\u201d directed by Steve H. Broadnax III, will be presented in a semi-staged early version at Bard\u2019s SummerScape festival this year. It is the latest effort to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/27\/arts\/music\/treemonisha-scott-joplin-productions.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">adapt Joplin\u2019s 1910 ragtime opera<\/a>, which never premiered in the composer\u2019s lifetime and always requires some degree of modern intervention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Bryan\u2019s adaptation of \u201cSuddenly Last Summer\u201d will have a libretto by Lester and Daniel Fish, who will also direct. Fish was behind one of the Fisher Center\u2019s biggest hits, the well-traveled sexy, dark revival of \u201cOklahoma!,\u201d which was first <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/07\/theater\/review-oklahoma-preserves-a-classic-while-adding-punch.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">presented at SummerScape<\/a> a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Isaac Bashevis Singer\u2019s story \u201cYentl the Yeshiva Boy\u201d is best known from Barbra Streisand\u2019s liberal film adaptation from 1983. This new version, with a book and lyrics by Lisa Kron (\u201cFun Home\u201d) and a score by Adam Benzwi, a longtime Kosky collaborator, will be more of a return to the source material, with a style rooted in Yiddish theater and music hall traditions. Kosky, one of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/18\/arts\/music\/barrie-kosky-director-threepenny-opera.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">busiest and most beloved stage directors<\/a> in Europe, has had projects travel to the United States, but this will be his first production built from scratch on American soil.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen you put these projects next to each other, patterns start to emerge,\u201d Lester said. \u201cIt\u2019s not polemical, but they all turn out to be stories about strong women who are challenging the status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">T.
