He was 73.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His death was confirmed by Laurie Jacobson, a friend of Mr. North\u2019s for 30 years. The cause was colorectal cancer, Ms. Jacobson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. North played the towheaded Dennis Mitchell, who roamed his neighborhood, usually clad in a striped shirt and overalls, with his friends, and often exasperated his neighbor, a retiree named George Wilson, who was played by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1962\/02\/18\/archives\/joseph-kearns-55-tv-actor-is-dead-played-mr-wilson-of-dennis-the.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Joseph Kearns<\/a>. Herbert Anderson played Dennis\u2019s father, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/05\/arts\/television\/gloria-henry-dead.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gloria Henry<\/a> played his mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dennis winds up causing lots of trouble, usually by accident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In one episode, a truck knocks over a street sign, and Dennis and a friend stand it up \u2014 incorrectly. Workmen then dig a gigantic hole, meant to be a pool for a different address, in Mr. Wilson\u2019s yard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The show, which was adapted from a comic strip by Hank Ketcham, presented an idyllic, innocent vision of suburban America as the 1950s gave way to the tumultuous \u201960s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But things were not easy for Mr. North behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many years after \u201cDennis the Menace\u201d ended, Mr. North said that his acting success came at the cost of a happy childhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1993, he told The Los Angeles Daily News that his aunt and uncle were his caretakers on set because his single mother was working full time. He said his aunt and uncle, who had died by the time of the interview, had abused him physically and emotionally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf it took me more than one or two takes, I would be threatened and then whacked,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. North said it took the death by suicide at age 42 of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1990\/01\/20\/obituaries\/rusty-hamer-actor-42.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Rusty Hamer<\/a>, who was a child star on \u201cThe Danny Thomas Show\u201d (also titled \u201cMake Room for Daddy\u201d) in the 1950s and \u201960s, to help him re-evaluate his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m finally starting a new life and burying Dennis Mitchell,\u201d Mr. North said in The Daily News interview. \u201cI need very badly again to be Jay North.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jay Waverly North Jr. was born on Aug. 3, 1951, in Los Angeles, and grew up there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. North <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/12\/19\/nyregion\/when-the-spotlight-lures-children.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">began acting<\/a> at around age 5 after begging his mother to help him get on \u201cThe Engineer Bill Show,\u201d a popular children\u2019s program during the 1950s also known as \u201cCartoon Express.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe kids were used as a participating stage audience, and I asked her to help me get on the show,\u201d Mr. North told The New York Times in 1993.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He appeared on several episodes of the show, and he also began endorsing products, including Post cereals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After \u201cDennis the Menace\u201d ended, Mr. North appeared on television shows including \u201cWagon Train,\u201d \u201cThe Man from U.N.C.L.E.,\u201d \u201cThe Lucy Show,\u201d \u201cMy Three Sons\u201d and \u201cJericho.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He had a lead role in the feature film \u201cMaya\u201d (1966), which followed two teenagers who go on an adventure through India astride an elephant, and went on to star in the film\u2019s brief spinoff television series, also \u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. North also did voice work, including the voice of Prince Turhan in \u201cThe Banana Splits Adventure Hour,\u201d and of the teenage Bamm-Bamm Rubble in \u201cThe Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But his acting career eventually fizzled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. North said he was often typecast and found it challenging to re-establish himself after \u201cDennis the Menace.\u201d He <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/navy.togetherweserved.com\/usn\/servlet\/tws.webapp.webapp?cmd=ShadowBoxProfile&amp;type=Person&amp;ID=578379&amp;binder=true\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enlisted<\/a> in the U.S. Navy in 1977 and was honorably discharged in 1979.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. North eventually moved to Lake Butler, Fla., and worked as a corrections officer with the Florida Department of Corrections.
