Movies directed by Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater and Ari Aster are among 19 films that will compete for the Palme d\u2019Or at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival, the event\u2019s organizers announced at a news conference on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The festival\u2019s 78th edition, which opens May 13 and runs through May 24, will also feature the premiere of \u201cMission Impossible: The Final Reckoning<\/a>,\u201d the eighth movie in the action series starring Tom Cruise, playing in an out-of-competition spot.<\/p>\n Linklater\u2019s movie, \u201cNouvelle Vague,\u201d is about the making of Jean-Luc Godard\u2019s 1960 classic \u201cBreathless,\u201d a seminal picture in the French New Wave film movement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Other movies by American directors appearing in competition are Anderson\u2019s \u201cThe Phoenician Scheme<\/a>,\u201d starring Benicio Del Toro as an eccentric businessman; Aster\u2019s \u201cEddington,\u201d starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, and focused on a small-town election; and Kelly Reichardt\u2019s \u201cThe Mastermind,\u201d about an art heist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Julia Ducournau, whose movie \u201cTitane\u201d won the Palme d\u2019Or in 2021<\/a>, will return to the competition with \u201cAlpha\u201d; and Joachim Trier, who directed \u201cThe Worst Person in the World,\u201d a breakout hit that same year, will present a new film, \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d<\/p>\n In recent years, the Cannes competition has premiered a host of movies that have gone on to dominate award season. Last year\u2019s lineup included Jacques Audiard\u2019s \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez,\u201d Coralie Fargeat\u2019s \u201cThe Substance\u201d and Sean Baker\u2019s \u201cAnora\u201d \u2014 the last of which won the Palme d\u2019Or<\/a> and this year\u2019s Academy Award for best picture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n A jury led by the French actor Juliette Binoche will announce the winner at a ceremony on May 24.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Outside the main competition, the sidebar section, known as Un Certain Regard<\/a>, features the directorial debuts of two prominent actors: Scarlett Johansson\u2019s \u201cEleanor the Great,\u201d in which a woman in her 90s moves to New York and tries to start life afresh; and Harris Dickinson\u2019s \u201cUrchin,\u201d a drama about a homeless person.<\/p>\n Aside from the main competition and Un Certain Regard, the festival also has special screenings, out-of-competition slots and a section called Cannes Premiere. Some notable movies playing in those categories include \u201cPrivate View,\u201d directed by Rebecca Zlotowski and starring Jodie Foster in her first French-language role for over two decades; \u201cStories of Surrender,\u201d based on Bono\u2019s acclaimed one-man stage show; and \u201cThe Disappearance of Josef Mengele,\u201d by the Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov.<\/p>\n
