Ms. Ridley, who was the mother of the Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe, was 72.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her family announced the death in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/us\/obituaries\/name\/alice-ridley-sidibe-obituary?id=58067694\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an obituary published online<\/a>. It did not cite a cause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Ridley\u2019s public life as a singer began underground in the mid-1980s, and she spent decades belting out songs in New York City subway stations. At first, the subway busking was meant to supplement income from her day job in education. Eventually, she quit to sing full time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In her early days of busking, the performances were collaborations with her brother Roger Ridley and their cousin Jimmy McMillan, the political activist who would become famous for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/10\/nyregion\/jimmy-mcmillan-rent-is-too-damn-high-candidate-is-retiring-from-politics.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">founding the Rent Is Too Damn High Party<\/a> in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe are not homeless,\u201d she told \u201cGood Morning America\u201d in 2010, referring to buskers. \u201cWe are not beggars. And we\u2019re not under drug influence, you know? There are traditional jobs, and there are nontraditional jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She compared busking in New York to \u201cbeing in a cathedral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s just music all over this city, and especially down underground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For Ms. Ridley, singing underground fulfilled a calling. In 2005, she appeared in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/06\/05\/movies\/how-her-little-play-became-his-big-movie.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the film \u201cHeights,\u201d directed by Chris Terrio, as a subway singer.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPeople always say, \u2018Why don\u2019t you sing in clubs?\u2019 \u201d Ms. Ridley <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2010\/02\/06\/precious-tones\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told The New York Post<\/a> in 2010. \u201cI tell them, \u2018This is my club.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her big break came that year when she auditioned for \u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent.\u201d Typically, most contestants on competition shows are younger, but Ms. Ridley was in her late 50s. In her audition, she impressed the judges with her rendition of the Etta James classic \u201cAt Last.\u201d She would be eliminated in the semifinals, but not before delivering other highly praised performances, including renditions of \u201cProud Mary\u201d and \u201cMidnight Train to Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The talent show stint kicked off her career above ground, and she began touring worldwide. Finding the travel grueling, Ms. Ridley returned to busking in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen I was no longer down under there,\u201d Ms. Ridley <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/18\/nyregion\/alice-tan-ridley-subway-singer-gets-the-spotlight-after-years-underground.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told The New York Times in 2016<\/a>, \u201cI missed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That same year, she released her debut album, \u201cNever Lost My Way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Alice Tan Ridley, the daughter of Melton Lee and Lessie B. Ridley, was born Alice Ann Ridley on Dec. 21, 1952. She grew up in a large musical family in Lumpkin, Ga.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy mother was my greatest influence,\u201d she told <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/2013\/07\/05\/subway-singer-alice-ridleys-got-talent\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Morning Call<\/a> in 2013, referring to her mother, Lessie. \u201cShe wrote songs and plays and had us all singing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her father, Melton Lee, was a guitar player. Roger, her older sibling, was also a street musician who played around the country and became prominent after appearing in performances for \u201cPlaying for Change,\u201d a project that unites musicians across the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She graduated from Stewart County High School in Lumpkin, Ga., around 1969, before moving to New York, where she had visited during summer breaks in high school. Ms. Ridley married Ibnou Sidibe, who was then a cabdriver, around 1980.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They had two children, Ahmed Sidibe and Gabourey Sidibe, before their marriage ended in divorce in the early 1990s. Ms. Ridley is also survived by two brothers, James D. Ridley and Tommy Lee Cherry; two sisters, Julia Van Mater-Miller and Mildred Ridley Dent; and two grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Singing was a third career for Ms. Ridley. In the early 1970s, she worked as a nursery teacher after moving to New York. In 1976, Ms. Ridley took a job as a teacher\u2019s aide for special needs children at a public elementary school in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The year before Ms. Ridley appeared on \u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent,\u201d her daughter, Ms. Sidibe, hit it big: She starred in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/11\/06\/movies\/06precious.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the movie \u201cPrecious,\u201d<\/a> a role for which Ms. Sidibe was nominated for an Oscar. The role came about, in part, because of Ms. Ridley. From her telling, she was approached to be in the movie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey asked me to play the part of the mother,\u201d Ms. Ridley told The Post in the 2010 interview. \u201cBut being a mom and teacher, I just couldn\u2019t play that part. It was just too hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The movie is an adaptation of the 1996 novel \u201cPush\u201d by Sapphire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI read the book, and I gave it to Gabby,\u201d Ms. Ridley said. \u201cHer friends encouraged her to try out for \u2018Precious,\u2019 and she got it.\u201d At the time, Ms. Sidibe was a psychology student secretly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/gabourey-sidibe-was-not-allowed-to-be-black-while-working-at-a-phone-sex-center-11696889\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">working as a phone-sex operator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the \u201cGood Morning America\u201d interview, Ms. Ridley recalled how she told her children that they \u201ccan be whatever you want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou can do whatever you want to do,\u201d Ms. Ridley said. \u201cYou just have to get up and do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Ms. Ridley\u2019s case, she wanted to be a singer \u2014 no matter where.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTravelers would be worried about their mortgages, getting fired and their jobs,\u201d Ms. Ridley <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/alice-tan-ridley-mother-of-gabourey-sidibe-interview\/article_9ef2b7a2-5c4b-5408-aacf-ef16a77077da.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told The Toronto Star in 2012<\/a>. \u201cThey would pass by me and see me singing.
