And talking about the hostages at the same time does anger some on the far left. One of the directors of the Oscar-winning doc \u201cNo Other Land\u201d recently got a lot of <\/strong>blowback<\/a><\/strong> for something similar. <\/strong>Look, there are false equivalencies in terms of power. That\u2019s what people are talking about. They\u2019re talking about dynamics of power. When you look at Gaza, you\u2019re talking about a place where their water and electricity are controlled. So even the framing of the earlier question of calling it a war, you know, I\u2019m like, \u201cAll right, call it whatever you want to call it.\u201d Yes, there are two sides who are fighting, but there\u2019s a massive power imbalance, and that is just unequivocally true.<\/p>\n

How would you describe it?<\/strong> I just said it: It\u2019s literal power. They could turn off the electricity, they could turn off the water, they can turn off what aid is getting in. It\u2019s like being in a wrestling match with someone where you\u2019re controlling the other guy\u2019s calories and how much water he gets. He sneaks a few PowerBars that you didn\u2019t know about. But where I stand is: I know so many people with kids. I hope to have kids. So for me to say all of that in one sentence \u2014 nobody wants there to be people getting bombed indiscriminately, and nobody wants there to be hostages. There is nothing controversial in saying it. When you\u2019re not saying everything that everyone wants to hear, they get upset. Jokes are one thing, but anything I\u2019ve said sincerely, I could tattoo it to myself because there\u2019s no problem. That\u2019s why I\u2019m not afraid. Because it\u2019s like: \u201cWhat did I say? \u2018Stop killing kids.\u2019\u201d \u201cOh, my God, this guy\u2019s crazy.\u201d What? It\u2019s not a thing.<\/p>\n

Are there parts of your life that you still feel like you\u2019re trying to understand through your art? <\/strong>Yeah, a lot. My wife and I are just being like, \u201cOh, should we have kids?\u201d I\u2019m in my 30s. The idea of not being a kid \u2014 when I started making my show, I was 26, and I\u2019m 34 now. So that\u2019s a lot of time. I think I still view myself as a kid, but I am an adult. When does self-discovery transition into: \u201cHey, this is<\/em> what I do. This is<\/em> who I am.\u201d That is something I\u2019ve been exploring a lot onstage.<\/p>\n

Are we going to have Ramy Youssef dad jokes? Is that where this is all heading? <\/strong>A hundred percent, yes. It will happen. Brace yourself.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve talked a lot about the self-reflective nature of your work, and you\u2019ve spent a lot of this first part of your career making your own stuff, telling your own stories. But now you\u2019re also in other people\u2019s projects much more prominently. Is there something freeing about that?<\/strong> It\u2019s amazing. I tried many years just being an auditioning actor, and no one ever knew what to do with me. \u201cWell, you\u2019re not this Indian character we wrote. We don\u2019t know if you\u2019re the friend or the leading guy.\u201d It was always that stuff, and so I wanted to create a specific frequency. And I\u2019ve been very lucky to get to do that. But then to get to now be at a place where people understand what it is that I do and are excited to do it, it\u2019s very freeing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
