{"id":47541,"date":"2025-04-12T16:18:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T20:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/sudan-clinic-workers-killed-in-zamzam-camp\/12\/04\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-04-12T16:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T20:18:11","slug":"sudan-clinic-workers-killed-in-zamzam-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/sudan-clinic-workers-killed-in-zamzam-camp\/12\/04\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Sudan Clinic Workers Killed in Zamzam Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sudanese paramilitaries killed the entire staff of the last medical clinic in a famine-stricken camp in the western region of Darfur, Sudan, as part of a broader assault that killed at least 100 people, aid groups and the United Nations said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The assault on the Zamzam camp, which holds 500,000 people in the besieged city of El Fasher, was notable even by the standards of a civil war that has seen countless atrocities as well as accusations of genocide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Paramilitaries with the Rapid Support Forces, or R.S.F., broke through the camp perimeter on Friday evening after hours of shelling. They then destroyed hundreds of homes and the camp\u2019s main market before turning their attack on the camp\u2019s last remaining medical clinic, according to Relief International, the aid group that runs the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nine hospital employees were killed, including the head doctor, the aid group <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/relief-international_relief-international-is-devastated-to-report-activity-7316838235903586304-txhY\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAehs78BIKTJ03xNABTao4gLp_KF7wsbzdo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> on Saturday. \u201cWe have learned the unthinkable,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThis is a profound tragedy for our organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kashif Shafique, the group\u2019s Sudan director, said in a phone interview that the aid workers \u2014 five medics and four drivers, his entire staff at the clinic \u2014 had been shot dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Paramilitaries had warned the medics to leave the day before the attack, Mr. Shafique said. But they had to treat civilians wounded by shelling and, in any event, the main routes out of the camp were closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere was no way out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The R.S.F. has been battling Sudan\u2019s military since April 2023, in a sprawling conflict that has caused the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crisis. As many as 150,000 Sudanese have been killed, according to U.S. estimates, and 13 million have been forced from their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The head of the United Nations in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/sudan\/attacks-zamzam-and-abu-shouk-camps-and-al-fasher-must-end-now-statement-united-nations-resident-and-humanitarian-coordinator-sudan-clementine-nkweta-salami\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> she was \u201cappalled and gravely alarmed\u201d by the violence in El Fasher, which continued into Saturday. At least 20 children were among 100 people killed, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some local groups <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dvsorg\/status\/1910923118656241694?s=48\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">circulated<\/a> videos of bodies strewn across the camp, which The New York Times was unable to verify.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Satellite images <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HRL_YaleSPH\/status\/1910775229968007495\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> on Friday by the Humanitarian Research Lab at the Yale School of Public Health showed military vehicles near the camp and fires burning inside it. The group called it \u201cthe most significant ground-based attack\u201d on Zamzam camp in a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The escalating violence comes days before a major international conference on Sudan that is scheduled to take place in London on Tuesday, the second anniversary of the war. The purpose of the conference is to attract funds for Sudan\u2019s severe humanitarian crisis. So far, donors have committed to just 10 percent of a $4.2 billion appeal by the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The conference has stoked criticism from some Sudanese because it will be attended by delegates from the United Arab Emirates, which has been accused of providing military and financial support to the R.S.F.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Human Rights Watch urged the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions on R.S.F. commanders responsible for abuses, and to condemn \u201ccountries providing support to parties in violation of the ongoing U.N. arms embargo.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cGlobal leaders need to act,\u201d the organization <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2025\/04\/11\/civilians-around-sudans-el-fasher-face-new-attacks\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Both sides in Sudan\u2019s war have been accused of war crimes by right groups, the United Nations and the United States, although only the R.S.F. has been accused of genocide. Sudan\u2019s military has regularly been accused of indiscriminately bombing crowded markets, often in the Darfur region, in multiple incidents that have sometimes killed more than 100 people at a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Earlier this month, the top United Nations human rights official, Volker T\u00fcrk, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2025\/04\/11\/civilians-around-sudans-el-fasher-face-new-attacks\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said he was \u201cutterly appalled\u201d<\/a> by reports of widespread summary executions of civilians in the capital, Khartoum, following the city\u2019s recapture by the Sudanese military.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On March 24, the military <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/25\/world\/africa\/sudan-military-bombing-darfur.html#:~:text=Cuts%20Hit%20Refugees-,Sudan%20Military%20Bombing%20Kills%20Dozens%20in%20Attack%20on%20Market%20in,the%20two%2Dyear%20civil%20war.\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">killed at least 54 people<\/a> in an attack on a busy market in Toura, a small town in North Darfur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Most of Darfur, however, is held by the R.S.F., which has been laying siege for more than a year to El Fasher, the last major city in the region that it does not control. It had been expected to step up the assault in recent weeks, since R.S.F. forces were expelled from Khartoum by the military in late March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There were signs for days before Friday\u2019s violence that a major attack was imminent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Video of the R.S.F. deputy leader Abdul Rahim Dagalo <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/wjrs352688\/status\/1909601021082714588\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mobilizing<\/a> his forces in the area circulated on social media. On Thursday, the R.S.F. began to shell Abu Shouk, another camp in the north of the city, killing at least 12 people, according to local rescue workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The fighters also began to attack Zamzam camp with artillery, gunfire and drones, according to aid groups and local activists. A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/01\/world\/africa\/famine-declared-darfur-sudan-war.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">famine was officially declared<\/a> at the camp last August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">American officials have repeatedly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/29\/world\/africa\/el-fasher-darfur-sudan.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">warned<\/a> of a possible ethnic massacre if the R.S.F. overruns El Fasher.
