Aimee Lou Wood, a star of HBO\u2019s \u201cThe White Lotus,\u201d has criticized \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d for a sketch that mocked her smile, calling it \u201cmean and unfunny.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms. Wood, a British actress, posted on Instagram on Sunday objecting to the sketch, in which the S.N.L. cast member Sarah Sherman impersonates Ms. Wood\u2019s character while wearing large prosthetic teeth.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am not thin skinned,\u201d Ms. Wood, 31, wrote in one of a series of posts on her Instagram stories, adding that she loves being joked about when \u201cit\u2019s clever and in good spirits.\u201d But \u201cthe joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n
In a subsequent post, Ms. Wood said she had received \u201capologies\u201d from S.N.L. but did not elaborate. Representatives for Ms. Wood and NBC, which broadcasts S.N.L., did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
The sketch, titled \u201cThe White POTUS,\u201d imagined the show\u2019s characters replaced by President Trump and members of his cabinet. Ms. Wood, who is from Manchester, England, also criticized Ms. Sherman\u2019s impersonation of her Mancunian accent.<\/p>\n
After her initial posts, Ms. Wood said that she had since received thousands of messages of support. She shared what appeared to be one such message, which said: \u201cIt was a sharp and funny skit until it suddenly took a screeching turn into 1970\u2019s misogyny.\u201d<\/p>\n
The third season of \u201cThe White Lotus,\u201d which concluded this month and was the series\u2019s most popular<\/a> yet, follows wealthy guests and staff members at a wellness resort in Thailand. Among the guests is Chelsea, played by Ms. Wood, a young romantic British woman who is dating an enigmatic older American.<\/p>\n Ms. Wood has been celebrated<\/a> for her natural smile, especially at a time when many celebrities are opting for veneers to achieve \u201cperfect\u201d teeth. But in a recent interview with GQ magazine, she said that the news media\u2019s focus on her appearance in coverage of the most recent season of \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d had made her feel uncomfortable, even if the attention was intended to be positive.<\/p>\n \u201cIt makes me really happy that it\u2019s symbolizing rebellion and freedom, but there\u2019s a limit,\u201d she told<\/a> the magazine. \u201cThe whole conversation is just about my teeth, and it makes me a bit sad because I\u2019m not getting to talk about my work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know if it was a man would we be talking about it this much?\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
