The assertions stem from a YouTube video featuring three Italian researchers with no background in Egyptology or <span>archaeology<\/span>.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;What they found was something amazing, five large structures near the base of the pyramid, connected by geometric paths,&#8221; <span>reads <\/span>a Malay-language <a href=\"https:\/\/mvau.lt\/media\/4b71cf4e-d102-4935-aaea-f14468071cd4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook<\/a> post published March <span>23<\/span>, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Each contains 5 horizontal levels and a sloping roof. Below this are 8 vertical cylindrical wells, hollow and surrounded by a spiral descent dropping 648 meters into the earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<p><span>Screenshot of the false post taken April 17, 2025<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The claims spread on social media after three researchers &#8212; <span>Corrado Malanga, Armando Mei and Filippo Biondi<\/span> &#8212; held a press <span>conference <\/span>March 22 and 23 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/4R4Z-LWXB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:YouTube;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The trio claimed &#8220;synthetic aperture radar&#8221; revealed &#8220;a colossal underground complex&#8221; under the Pyramid of Khafre, the second of the ancient pyramids of Giza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mvau.lt\/media\/47d28376-c654-4050-a86a-c58fe43ddcec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Similar;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Similar<\/a> posts spread elsewhere on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mvau.lt\/media\/c44498d7-fb34-407c-ab02-6130707b3939\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook<\/a> in various languages, including <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/M8C8-LCG7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:German;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">German<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/8BYT-CHZG\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Arabic;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Arabic <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/FN3N-Q9WW\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Turkish;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Turkish<\/a>. British tabloid the Daily Mail <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/9UZ9-TMSE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:also picked up;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">also picked up<\/a> the <span>claim<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Experts, however, told AFP the trio&#8217;s research does not hold water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span><span>&#8220;The pyramids are monumental stone structures, built on a flat plateau,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/jgolettepelletier.fr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jean-Guillaume Olette-Pelletier;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Jean-Guillaume Olette-Pelletier<\/a>, doctor of Egyptology at the University of Paris-Sorbonne (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/74SR-FLSM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>). <\/span><\/span><span>&#8220;They were then excavated or converted to include burial and funerary chambers, but there is no evidence of underground networks as deep as those mentioned.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span><span>Despite the criticism, Biondi told AFP the researchers stand by their findings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span><span>\u201cThe term impossible does not apply when objective evidence emerges,&#8221; he said in an April 22 email. <\/span><\/span><span><span>\u201cOur satellite data indicate the presence of large artificial structures beneath the Giza Plateau, structures that appear to belong to an unknown civilization referenced in ancient myths worldwide.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\"><span>&#8216;Nothing but fabrications&#8217;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saa.org\/about-archaeology\/what-do-archaeologists-do\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Archaeology;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Archaeology<\/a> <\/span>uses techniques such as magnetometry, which can analyse soils up to three to five meters deep, depending on their nature (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/KT66-UREA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>However, the researchers&#8217; It is impossible to reach such a depth with this technique,&#8221; the radar <span>specialist <\/span>said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NASA itself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/learn\/webinars\/special-two-part-webinar-part-1-introduction-synthetic-aperture-radar-sar-data-1?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:confirms;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">confirms <\/a>that SAR &#8220;<span>allows <\/span>detailed images of the Earth&#8217;s relief to be obtained&#8221; but &#8220;is not designed to probe extreme depths&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/8MDD-UKAA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">No archaeological <span>background<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The three Italian researchers behind the findings have no background in Egyptology or archaeology, and their <span>work <\/span>was not published in any credible scientific journals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/GBP3-UEQN\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Malanga;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Malanga<\/a> is a researcher affiliated with the University of Pisa in Italy, but his area of specialisation is organic chemistry and ufology &#8212; the study of UFOs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Biondi, described as a researcher at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, is no longer part of that institution. He now runs the private radar imaging company Harmonicsar, according to his <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/E88V-WMKX\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:LinkedIn posts;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">LinkedIn posts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mei studied political science and identifies himself as an independent archaeological researcher and journalist, according to his <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/54B5-DV2V\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:LinkedIn account;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">LinkedIn account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He is the author of several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/QGS4-EQ4G\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:books;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">books<\/a> defending pseudo-archaeological theories, including one claiming the Visoko Hills in Bosnia and Herzegovina are not natural formations, but ancient pyramids built by humans.
