But he wasn\u2019t a frustrated commuter. He was dancing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And he wasn\u2019t the only one. Nearby, a man and woman twirled in the sinuous style of partner dance called Brazilian Zouk and groups of K-pop dancers swerved their hips in unison. Passengers flowed out of elevators, some stopping to watch, some rushing by with their luggage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf you ever want to find the culmination of what New York is as a culture, but expressing itself through dance,\u201d Lockhorn, 24, said, \u201cthis is a good place to find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Penn Station, the transit hub for hurrying commuters and Amtrak riders, has a side gig. Its wide, lower level corridor \u2014 specifically the passageway leading to the Moynihan Train Hall from Track 7 to Track 16 of the Long Island Rail Road \u2014 is an unlikely dance studio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Officially called the West End Concourse, the corridor has a lot going for it: It\u2019s easily accessible, the floors are spacious and smooth, and there are public restrooms, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/10\/nyregion\/nyc-bill-public-bathrooms.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">rarity<\/a> in New York City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s a ready-made stage for all sorts of group and partnered dance, including hip-hop, K-pop and salsa. Reflective glass windows overlooking the tracks double as mirrors. Rows of blue lights overhead make for pleasing visuals when filmed. The biggest draw? It\u2019s free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lockhorn, who leads the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/foolishfunkateers\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foolish Funkateers<\/a>, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/23\/arts\/dance\/don-campbell-dead.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Campbellocking<\/a> or locking group, said his group began dancing at Penn Station last year after seeing K-pop dancers post videos from the concourse on social media. On warmer days, the Foolish Funkateers often meet outdoors near City Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But, Lockhorn said, \u201cthis is what we call home on days where we can\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Groups stake out a section of the corridor, typically spanning one or two train tracks, to make a kind of mini studio. The slanted windows descend into a flat ledge, perfect for resting water bottles, speakers and cellphones that capture polished choreography.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The only drawback, said Destiny Rodriguez, a K-pop dancer with the group <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/v3rscrewnyc\/?hl=zh-cn\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">V3RS Crew NYC<\/a>, is that it\u2019s louder than a studio. \u201cIt\u2019s more open,\u201d she said. \u201cBut we still work with it, and we get everything done perfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Penn Station\u2019s lower level isn\u2019t really a substitute for a light-flooded New York dance studio. But in Manhattan, renting that kind of space can <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tagvenue.com\/us\/search\/dance-studio?longitude_from=-74.0662196779785&amp;longitude_to=-73.87224232202146&amp;latitude_from=40.67920503885231&amp;latitude_to=40.83887802240415&amp;form_timestamp=1745278548&amp;getAllRoomsPositions=true&amp;hideRoomsData=false&amp;items_per_page=36&amp;map_zoom=12&amp;people=20&amp;date=&amp;time_from=&amp;time_to=&amp;room_layout=0&amp;min_price=&amp;max_price=&amp;price_range=&amp;price_method=&amp;neighbourhood=Manhattan%2C%20New%20York%2C%20NY%2C%20USA&amp;page=1&amp;room_tag=dance-studio&amp;supervenues_only=false&amp;flexible_cancellation_only=false&amp;no_age_restriction=false&amp;iso_country_code=US&amp;view=results&amp;trigger=map\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cost<\/a> $35 to $150 an hour. It\u2019s a prohibitive price for the dancers, mostly unpaid, who spend many hours preparing for performances and competitions or creating videos for fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And the transit hub has at least one thing those studios lack: random audiences who are quickly delighted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Luke Fletcher, who had come to New York on a day trip from Boston with his 15-year-old son, said he was charmed to see dancers while waiting for his train home. \u201cI just find it amazing,\u201d he said, \u201cthat even during the week, they\u2019re doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kai Fritz, a K-pop dancer with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/notshydancecrew\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Not Shy Dance Crew<\/a>, makes the hourlong trek on the No. 2 train from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Flatbush a few times a week. This is in the early evening, deep into a day that starts with a 5 a.m. barista shift in Bensonhurst, and includes a pit stop at home for resting and stretching before the journey to Penn Station.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI love to dance, and a barista salary doesn\u2019t get you a whole lot of money,\u201d Fritz, 22, said, adding that the station was the most accessible place for the group to meet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And then there is the floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Paula Naconecy, 35, who was practicing with a small group of Brazilian <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nyzouk\/?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zouk<\/a> dancers, waxed poetic: \u201cIt\u2019s slippery. Or, not slippery, but smooth. There\u2019s no tiles, no cracks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She\u2019s tried out many spots around the city, she said, looking for the perfect floor, \u201cand this is the best I\u2019ve found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A pair of salsa dancers shared her enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI mean, I\u2019m with my salsa shoes, and I can spin,\u201d said Lizbeth Lucana, who comes in from Long Island to practice more than 20 hours a week with her dance partner Jacob Aliapoulios. \u201cLike, I can do multiple spins.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dancing in the concourse is neither sanctioned nor unsanctioned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPenn Station is first and foremost a transportation hub,\u201d said Aaron Donovan, the deputy communications director for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. \u201cBut you know, as long as folks abide by the rules and regulations that govern the use of the space and don\u2019t block platforms or interfere with passenger flows, we generally don\u2019t have any problem with what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Naconecy said she had been told to stop filming by security guards. And Fritz said Not Shy Dance Crew had gone unbothered for the most part, but had been asked at times to turn the music down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The concourse lives in a kind of gray area. Penn Station, Donovan said, is owned by Amtrak, but the passageway is managed and policed by the Long Island Rail Road, which has its own rules of conduct, as does the adjacent New York City subway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And unlike buskers, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/07\/nyregion\/subway-musicians-auditions-mta.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">apply to perform<\/a> in the subways, these dancers don\u2019t fall under a clear jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They don\u2019t perform for tips.
