He was 82.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The cause of death, in a hospital, was complications of pneumonia, said Stephanie Hogan, his niece.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Adiarte had a varied career, in which he played many characters, of various ethnicities, before he was cast in the first season of \u201cM*A*S*H\u201d as Ho-Jon, the Korean helper of the wisecracking doctors Hawkeye Pierce (Alan Alda) and Trapper John (<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/01\/nyregion\/wayne-rogers-82-actor-in-tv-show-mash.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wayne Rogers<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As a child, Patrick portrayed one of the children of the king of Siam (now Thailand), who are tutored by a widowed schoolmistress in the original 1951 Broadway production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical \u201cThe King and I.\u201d As a teenager, he played an assimilated Chinese American character in another of their shows, \u201cFlower Drum Song\u201d (1958).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He also appeared in the movie versions of both shows, in 1956 and 1961.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the 1960s and early \u201970s, he was seen on several TV series. On \u201cBonanza,\u201d he played a Native American named Swift Eagle; on \u201cIronside,\u201d he was a Samoan boxer; on \u201cCBS Playhouse,\u201d he was a Viet Cong guerrilla. He played a Hawaiian tour guide in two episodes of \u201cThe Brady Bunch,\u201d filmed in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In \u201cHigh Time,\u201d a 1960 film directed by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/17\/movies\/17edwards.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Blake Edwards<\/a>, he played an Indian exchange student who rooms with Bing Crosby, whose character returns to college in his 50s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Adiarte also appeared frequently as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=a2fccd0347a25b28&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS1098US1098&amp;sxsrf=AHTn8zpulPvsRNyhF41oiSWWSGnIU6pBow:1745414750818&amp;q=patrick+adiarte+and+hullabaloo&amp;udm=7&amp;fbs=ABzOT_CWdhQLP1FcmU5B0fn3xuWpA-dk4wpBWOGsoR7DG5zJBjLjqIC1CYKD9D-DQAQS3Z44LBK6yTXN_5587Z3ya9D7rdSpU4oiZ-vqI3S9pgZWwwB3LRDwatyHNDj5PPNIP3O9LeuTlkH2sZZEnhZo46WW8dmhgYyWk-CayTWX1GZ9eEYPairggklKerSMDxaEdATd2U52Nx2yFrTdCysVGLa_jYhYnw&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiA-tTRoO6MAxX8g4kEHa2nDyIQtKgLegQIFhAB&amp;biw=2240&amp;bih=1172&amp;dpr=2#fpstate=ive&amp;vld=cid:a3e50e01,vid:X7HsxisV46M,st:0\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a dancer on the musical variety show \u201cHullabaloo\u201d<\/a> from 1965 to 1966. He told The Associated Press in 1965 that the most difficult dances for him to learn were the Watusi and the swim.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSometimes it takes me as long as four or five weeks to pick up something that is really simple for the untrained,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He also had a brief career as a singer. He recorded a single, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EPbZ9GzE8rk\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFive Different Girls<\/a>,\u201d in 1966, and sang it on the show. One newspaper headline called him the \u201cHullabalooest Hullabalooer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1972, Mr. Adiarte appeared as the orphaned Ho-Jon on \u201cM*A*S*H,\u201d first in the pilot and then in six more episodes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ho-Jon figured prominently in the pilot, in which Hawkeye and Trapper raise money to send him to medical school in the United States. In another episode, Ho-Jon confesses to stealing valuables to sell so that he can bribe border guards to let him bring the rest of his family out of North Korea. After the 11th episode, the character was gone, without explanation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHo-Jon is one of those characters that \u2018M*A*S*H\u2019 fans remember quite fondly,\u201d Ryan Patrick, one of the hosts of the podcast <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mashmatterspodcast.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cM*A*S*H Matters,\u201d<\/a> said in an email. \u201cMany \u2018M*A*S*H\u2019 fans simply assume that Ho-Jon traveled to the States to live with Hawkeye\u2019s father while going to medical school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After \u201cM*A*S*H,\u201d Mr. Adiarte\u2019s career focus changed. He worked as a choreographer of several productions of a musical revue, \u201cStarting Here, Starting Now,\u201d and as a dance teacher at Santa Monica College from 1985 to 1997.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Patrick Napoleon Adiarte was born on Aug. 2, 1942, in Manila. His mother, Purita (Rodriguez) Adiarte, was an actress and dancer, and his father, Isidro Adiarte, was a captain attached to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In February 1945, Patrick, his mother and his sister, Irene, were imprisoned on the island of Cebu. When Allied forces fought to reoccupy the island, the Japanese set fire to the prison compound and threw grenades that caused severe burns to Irene and lesser wounds to Patrick as the family tried to escape, according to a report by a U.S. congressional committee. In March, his father was captured and put to death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Patrick, his mother and his sister immigrated to the United States in 1946 and settled in New York City, where Irene underwent surgery on her face. The family was at risk of being deported for overstaying their allotted time as visitors. But in 1956, the U.S. Senate <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/SERIALSET-11902_00_00-051-1789-0000\/pdf\/SERIALSET-11902_00_00-051-1789-0000.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passed a bill<\/a>, written by John F. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, that granted citizenship to them and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Meanwhile, Patrick, who was given dancing lessons by his mother, joined the cast of \u201cThe King and I\u201d on Broadway as a replacement in 1951, earning $85 a week as one of the children of King Mongkut, a role made famous by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1985\/10\/10\/arts\/yul-brynner-theater-s-king-dies.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Yul Brynner<\/a>. Patrick played the crown prince when the show went on tour, and in the film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI sort of grew up from one of the little princes to the role of crown price,\u201d Mr. Adiarte told The Associated Press. \u201cIt took about four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPatrick is a mighty fine dancer,\u201d Mr. Kelly said before he and Mr. Adiarte demonstrated old and modern styles of tap. \u201cIf there\u2019s going to be another Fred Astaire, I think it might as well, might well be Pat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In addition to Ms. Hogan, Mr. Adiarte is survived by his companion, Shirley Kong, and a nephew, Mike DeVito.
