Trump began to sing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey are animals! Monsters!\u2026Support our police! Bring back the death penalty!\u201d he bellowed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The opera, which chronicles how the young men were forced to confess and later were exonerated, depicts President Trump as an inflammatory figure who, in 1989, bought several full-page newspaper ads that demonized \u201croving bands of wild criminals,\u201d adding, \u201cI want them to be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When the work \u2014 composed by Anthony Davis with a libretto by Richard Wesley \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/16\/arts\/music\/central-park-five-opera-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">premiered<\/a> in California in 2019, Mr. Trump\u2019s approval ratings were low and Democrats were itching to challenge him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, as a new production opens next month at the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/detroitopera.org\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Detroit Opera House<\/a>, the setting is quite different. Mr. Trump is a resurrected, emboldened political force who, since returning to office, has wielded power to shutter federal agencies, cut grants and strong-arm law firms and universities, all of which has led some opponents to worry about retaliation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">None of this has been lost on Detroit Opera, as the company braces for blowback and hopes for applause. Its leadership team understands the perils of mounting a production that waves a red cape at a pumped-up, reactive presidency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Surprisingly, the opera is partially financed by the National Endowment for the Arts, with some $40,000 of the production\u2019s $1 million cost coming through a federal grant. It was awarded, and paid, before the agency canceled most of its existing grants at the Trump administration\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Todd Strange, the tenor who plays Mr. Trump, said in an interview that he could not deny feeling some trepidation at portraying a president who so consistently hits back at his critics. Still, Mr. Strange said, it was important to press forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe fear can\u2019t shut me down from doing that,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to run away from the role.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The stakes were certainly lower during Mr. Trump\u2019s first term, when he largely focused on broader issues and left cultural organizations alone. Round two has been different. The president has taken direct aim at culture and arts institutions \u2014 inserting himself as the head of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and challenging the leadership and programming of the Smithsonian Institution in an effort to align them with his view of America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/arts\/music\/trump-kennedy-center.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">criticized<\/a> the Kennedy Center for celebrating \u201cradical left lunatics\u201d and the Smithsonian for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/28\/arts\/design\/trump-smithsonian-institution-eo.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">coming<\/a> \u201cunder the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Detroit Opera says it is prepared for what might be looming, that it confirmed the backing of board members, alerted donors, considered the risks and took stock of its core mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis piece is so worth telling,\u201d said Yuval Sharon, the company\u2019s artistic director. \u201cWe are not a political organization. We are a cultural organization that serves the city of Detroit and the greater region. And we are not taking a position with this opera, but it\u2019s obviously going to be inflammatory to have the character of Donald Trump onstage.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Patty Isacson Sabee, the company\u2019s president and chief executive, said she thought it was important to have \u201ca healthy amount of fear,\u201d adding, \u201cThat will help drive me to make the best decisions about how to take care of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company has put in place additional precautions \u2014 beefing up security and preparing audience members for metal detectors at the door.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Detroit Opera has also enlisted an employee assistance program for this production in case any of the artists, creative team or staff decide they need additional support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Davis, the composer of the work, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2020, said this is a moment in the country that calls for artistic courage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey\u2019re trying to erase history, whether it\u2019s slavery or the civil rights struggle, or the history of racism,\u201d said Mr. Davis. \u201cI don\u2019t think we can allow that. Particularly as African-Americans, we have to speak up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing now with deportation the casualties that happen when there is a rush to judgment, when they don\u2019t follow procedure, when they ignore evidence, when you ignore the law, when you ignore the system that protects us,\u201d he added. \u201cThat can be the cost of dissent. We\u2019re allowed to say what we want, and that\u2019s part of our country. That\u2019s part of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump has bristled in the past about his depiction on shows like \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d that have satirized him, but his reaction to the opera, a more serious work whose libretto incorporates Mr. Trump\u2019s own words, is so far not known.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The White House press office did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump did not apologize for his characterization of the young men, and just this month a federal judge <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/central-park-five-donald-trump-defamation-lawsuit-d7107a64130be9723d79c6cc52dfd0dd\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refused<\/a> to dismiss a defamation lawsuit they brought against the president.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The five men \u2014 Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson and Antron McCray \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/21\/nyregion\/trump-central-park-five-defamation-lawsuit.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">sued<\/a> the president for his remarks in a 2024 presidential debate with Kamala Harris. Mr. Trump falsely said that the men had pleaded guilty to the crime and that someone had been killed during the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the Democratic National Convention that year, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/19\/nyregion\/yusef-salaam-dnc-central-park-five.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">four of the five men<\/a> \u2014 who now prefer to be called the Exonerated Five \u2014 said that what Mr. Trump did to them was devastating and disqualified him for a second term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The men spent between seven to 13 years in prison until their sentences were overturned in 2002 when the district attorney <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/12\/06\/nyregion\/a-crime-revisited-the-decision-13-years-later-official-reversal-in-jogger-attack.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">determined<\/a> that the assault was committed by a man named Matias Reyes. The five subsequently received a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/06\/nyregion\/41-million-settlement-for-5-convicted-in-jogger-case-is-approved.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">$41 million dollar settlement<\/a> from New York City and have since been the focus of films, including a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/22\/movies\/the-documentary-the-central-park-five.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">documentary<\/a> by Ken Burns, and the fictionalized, Emmy Award-winning Netflix series \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/30\/arts\/television\/when-they-see-us-netflix.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">When They See Us<\/a>,\u201d by Ava DuVernay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As is typical with opera production calendars, Detroit scheduled \u201cThe Central Park Five\u201d two years in advance, before Mr. Trump\u2019s second-term aspirations had gathered steam. Yet when Mr. Sharon, the artistic director, reached out to Mr. Davis after the 2024 election, the composer first thought he was calling to cancel the \u201cCentral Park Five.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat was the first indication to me that there is likely going to be a great cooling-off effect in our culture,\u201d Mr. Sharon said, \u201cthat we had to actively fight against.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The board chairman of Detroit Opera said that he and his fellow trustees have been unwavering in their support of the production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere was never a moment where we questioned this,\u201d said the chairman, Ethan D. Davidson. \u201cAudiences are increasingly demanding stories that are relevant to their lived experiences. There is no better example of that than the \u2018Central Park Five.\u2019 People in this community want to see themselves represented onstage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Those who are depicting members of the Central Park Five expressed a similar sense of resolve. \u201cThe job of art is to be society\u2019s mirror,\u201d said Chaz\u2019men Williams-Ali, who plays Santana. \u201cWho could have foreseen that we would be back with this person in the White House with this opera being what it is? But here we are, and we can\u2019t let that stop us from taking a swing at it and saying what we got to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nataki Garrett, the opera\u2019s director, said that as a Black woman who has held<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>leadership positions \u2014 she recently served as the artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival \u2014 she already felt vulnerable under Mr. Trump, given his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/ending-radical-and-wasteful-government-dei-programs-and-preferencing\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">termination<\/a> of diversity efforts and his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/11\/us\/politics\/sexual-assault-survivor-reaction.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">history<\/a> of disparaging women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI have to go into this with my eyes wide open, and I have to be bare in the face of my own fear,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it is of the utmost importance to make sure that this story is told.
