{"id":48212,"date":"2025-04-29T07:58:59","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T11:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/attack-on-migrant-facility-in-yemen-kills-dozens-houthis-and-aid-officials-say\/29\/04\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T07:58:59","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T11:58:59","slug":"attack-on-migrant-facility-in-yemen-kills-dozens-houthis-and-aid-officials-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/attack-on-migrant-facility-in-yemen-kills-dozens-houthis-and-aid-officials-say\/29\/04\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Attack on Migrant Facility in Yemen Kills Dozens, Houthis and Aid Officials Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dozens of people were killed on Monday in an attack that hit a migrant facility in an area of northern Yemen controlled by the Houthi militia, according to the group and aid officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/houthi-yemen-red-sea-attacks.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Houthi militia<\/a>, which is backed by Iran, said that an American strike hit what the group called a migrant center in Saada, killing at least 68 African migrants. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A U.S. Defense Department official said that Central Command was \u201caware of the claims of civilian casualties related to the U.S. strikes in Yemen, and we take those claims very seriously.\u201d The official said it was conducting a damage assessment and an inquiry into the Houthis\u2019 claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The attack came hours after the U.S. military said that American forces had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/27\/us\/politics\/military-targets-houthis-yemen.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">conducted more than 800 strikes<\/a> in Yemen since mid-March in a campaign against the Houthis. It said the campaign targeted \u201cmultiple command-and-control facilities, air defense systems, advanced weapons manufacturing facilities and advanced weapons storage locations\u201d \u2014 but made no mention of civilian casualties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Houthi officials have said that more than 100 civilians have been killed and condemned the latest strike as a \u201cheinous crime against African migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Houthis and the U.S. military have made competing claims about who was responsible for civilian deaths in recent strikes. Last week, a spokesman for the U.S. Central Command said that an explosion on April 20 that killed 12 people in the Yemeni capital <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/24\/world\/middleeast\/us-yemen-houthi-misfire.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">had been caused by a misfired Houthi missile<\/a>, not an American strike as the Houthis had claimed. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday, graphic footage broadcast by the Houthi-controlled al-Masirah news channel showed bodies scattered amid the rubble in Saada. In addition to the dozens who were killed, at least 40 migrants were injured, according to two aid officials in Yemen who spoke on the condition of anonymity while they further verified the circumstances of the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The United Nations said it was deeply alarmed by the reports of an airstrike on the migrant facility, adding that it had received reports from colleagues that hospitals in Saada were being overwhelmed because of their limited capacity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTwo nearby hospitals have already received more than 50 injured people, many of them critically wounded,\u201d St\u00e9phane Dujarric, the spokesman for the U.N. secretary general, said. \u201cThese numbers could increase as search-and-rescue efforts continue, which are being led by frontline responders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Houthis claimed that the migrant center was operating under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration and the International Committee of the Red Cross \u2014 an assertion that both organizations denied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The International Organization for Migration said that it was not operating at the facility but that it was monitoring the situation and was \u201cready to offer support as needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The International Committee of the Red Cross said it did not run or supervise the facility but that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icrc.org\/en\/news-release\/yemen-icrc-responds-deadly-attack-saada-prison-urges-protection-civilians-amidst\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Red Cross and the Yemen Red Crescent Society<\/a> were working to evacuate the wounded to nearby hospitals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Each year, tens of thousands of African migrants <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/16\/opinion\/african-migration-yemen.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">attempt the perilous journey<\/a> across the narrow strait separating the Horn of Africa from the Arabian Peninsula, hoping to reach wealthy Gulf States north of Yemen. Nearly 60,900 migrants have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mena.iom.int\/news\/iom-chief-sounds-alarm-yemen-marks-decade-war-and-humanitarian-despair\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrived in Yemen<\/a> in 2024 alone, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mena.iom.int\/news\/iom-chief-sounds-alarm-yemen-marks-decade-war-and-humanitarian-despair\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the International Organization for Migration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yemen\u2019s ongoing conflict and political instability have made it an increasingly dangerous destination for migrants.
