{"id":48345,"date":"2025-05-01T11:33:03","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T15:33:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/trans-women-banned-from-competing-in-womens-soccer-in-england\/01\/05\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-05-01T11:33:03","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T15:33:03","slug":"trans-women-banned-from-competing-in-womens-soccer-in-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/trans-women-banned-from-competing-in-womens-soccer-in-england\/01\/05\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Trans Women Banned From Competing in Women\u2019s Soccer in England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Transgender women will be barred from playing for women\u2019s soccer teams in England from June 1, the Football Association, the sport\u2019s governing body in the country, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefa.com\/news\/2025\/may\/01\/fa-transgender-policy-update-statement-supreme-court-ruling-20250105\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>, the Football Association, known as the F.A., said that it had changed its policy as a result of a Supreme Court ruling last month, which said that Britain\u2019s equality laws were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/16\/world\/europe\/uk-supreme-court-woman-definition-trans.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">based on \u201cbiological sex\u201d<\/a> and that trans women did not fall within the legal definition of women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The F.A. is the latest body to update its policies as a result of the judgment, which all public and private bodies in Britain must now incorporate into internal practice on single-sex services and spaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The association said that the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling required it to change, meaning that \u201ctransgender women will no longer be able to play in women\u2019s football in England.\u201d The ban covers amateur soccer and regional leagues that are governed by the F.A., as well as the professional game.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify, and we are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game,\u201d the association added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other sporting bodies are in the process of developing policies resulting from the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling. The Scottish Football Association has also announced that from the start of the 2025-26 season, \u201conly biological females will be permitted to play in competitive girls\u2019 and women\u2019s football.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Pride Sports, a British L.G.B.T.Q. group that runs <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.footballvhomophobia.com\/fvt\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.footballvhomophobia.com\/fvt\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">campaign to combat transphobia in soccer<\/a>, said it was \u201cdeeply saddened\u201d by the announcements in England and Scotland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The group said that it knew of fewer than 30 trans women active in women\u2019s soccer across both countries and that most had been \u201cplaying for a number of years without incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWithin weeks, they will lose not just their familiar place in football but the many physical and mental health benefits that come from being part of a welcoming team environment,\u201d the statement added. \u201cOne consequence of these bans will, inevitably, be a rise in incidents of transphobia in football.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Announcing the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling last month, the deputy president of the court, Patrick Hodge, said its unanimous decision was that \u201cthe terms \u2018woman\u2019 and \u2018sex\u2019 in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological women and biological sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But he added that the judgment was not a \u201ctriumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another\u201d and that trans people would continue to have protections against discrimination under a different part of the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the ruling was celebrated by supporters of the campaigners that brought the case, including the author J.K.
