No international pressure, judicial blackmail, or foreign tribunal will make us back down from this conviction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The area under dispute represents two-thirds of Guyana and is rich in gold, diamonds, timber and other natural resources. It also is located close to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/guyana-oil-discovery-money-14c23a72c6d7c13675493ede42ed1000\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:massive offshore oil deposits;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">massive offshore oil deposits<\/a>, with current production averaging some 650,000 barrels per day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Venezuela has always considered Essequibo as its own because the region was within its boundaries during the Spanish colonial period. It has long dismissed the border drawn by international arbitrators in 1899, when Guyana was still a British colony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After years of fruitless mediation, Guyana asked the world court in 2018 to rule that the 1899 border decision is valid and binding. Venezuela argues that a 1966 agreement to resolve the dispute effectively nullified the original arbitration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The case is still pending in court while <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/guyana-venezuela-border-essequibo-military-ankoko-mining-072e3f69997521fb178091362ba27ccf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tensions between the two countries;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tensions between the two countries<\/a> keep rising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In late 2023, Maduro threatened to annex the region by force after <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-guyana-essequibo-territory-dispute-maduro-referendum-90a4f0f962a83620903987a68a7d39b0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:holding a referendum;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">holding a referendum<\/a> asking voters if Essequibo should be turned into a Venezuelan state.
