Al Hadath, a Saudi news channel, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Alhadath_Brk\/status\/1918250464648249353\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> that 230 civilians had been killed, while Al Jazeera <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/2\/sudanese-paramilitaries-kill-19-after-taking-city-of-al-nahud-sources\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> 19 dead and 37 wounded. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The paramilitary fighters, called the Rapid Support Forces, said on Thursday that they had attacked Nahud, which had been held by the Sudanese military along a highway connecting territory it holds with Darfur \u2014 a western region that has become a stronghold for the Rapid Support Forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At least 542 civilians have been killed in the region in just three weeks, the U.N. human rights chief, Volker T\u00fcrk, said on Thursday, adding that the real toll is likely much higher. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe horror unfolding in Sudan knows no bounds,\u201d he said in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2025\/05\/horrors-sudan-know-no-bounds-warns-turk-urging-end-conflict\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> about the war. \u201cMy fears are all the greater given the ominous warning by the R.S.F. of \u2018bloodshed\u2019 ahead of imminent battles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Sudanese military drove Rapid Support Forces fighters <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/26\/world\/africa\/sudan-khartoum-war-rsf-withdrawal.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">out of Khartoum, the country\u2019s capital,<\/a> in March,<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>but since then the paramilitary group has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/16\/world\/africa\/sudan-rsf-zamzam.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">declared its own government<\/a> in the areas that it controls, and pressed a major offensive to seize all of Darfur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The doctors\u2019 group, the Sudan Doctors Network, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SDN154\/status\/1918276092399620356\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> that Rapid Support Forces fighters had carried out a \u201clarge-scale massacre\u201d in Nahud on Thursday night, with 21 children and 15 women among the dead. The group said that the troops had also looted a medical supply warehouse, markets, pharmacies and a hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Abdallah Almana, a 29-year-old outside Sudan, said he had been desperately trying to reach his father in Nahud on Friday. \u201cYesterday, it was possible to reach out to people,\u201d he said, \u201cbut today, everything just disappeared.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He said that he had heard of people breaking into houses and looting vehicles, and that he had a cousin, who worked as a driver in the market, killed by a \u201crandom bullet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Videos circulating on the social media appeared to show at least one prominent Rapid Security Forces commander leading attacks in the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The assault \u201cstripped the city of its last means of health care and halted medical services for many patients and injured individuals who rely on them,\u201d the group said on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The toll did not include military personnel, and was likely to rise, the group added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Sudan War Monitor, a group of journalists and researchers who track the civil war, now it its third year, said that the Sudanese military had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sudanwarmonitor.com\/p\/rsf-seizes-control-of-al-nahud?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email#media-559b8a73-3aa2-443f-b8db-ed5a6c22464b\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost the city on Thursday<\/a>, leaving it without a key hub to push into Rapid Support Forces territory in Darfur. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A Sudanese military spokesman, Nabil Abdallah, denied that Nahud had fallen to the Rapid Support Forces and said the military still controlled the city, according to the war monitor. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Thursday\u2019s attack came as the Rapid Support Forces pressed its long siege on El Fasher, the last major city in Darfur that the it does not control, and as the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces face new accusations of atrocities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last month, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/12\/world\/africa\/sudan-zamzam-clinic-staff-killed.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">aid groups and the United Nations said<\/a> that Rapid Support Forces fighters killed the entire staff of a medical clinic in a famine-stricken camp in Darfur, killing hundreds and forcing as many as 400,000 others <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/16\/world\/africa\/sudan-rsf-zamzam.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> to flee the camp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite the Rapid Support Forces withdrawal from the capital and the urging of officials like Mr. T\u00fcrk, of the U.N., and others, many diplomats and aid workers believe that the war\u2019s end is far from sight. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The war began<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/sudan-khartoum-military.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> as an alliance between the military and the Rapid Support Forces crumbled<\/a> in 2023.
