{"id":48464,"date":"2025-05-03T07:13:04","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T11:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/druse-in-syrian-town-rocked-by-violence-agree-to-disarm-militias\/03\/05\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-05-03T07:13:04","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T11:13:04","slug":"druse-in-syrian-town-rocked-by-violence-agree-to-disarm-militias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/druse-in-syrian-town-rocked-by-violence-agree-to-disarm-militias\/03\/05\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Druse in Syrian Town Rocked by Violence Agree to Disarm Militias"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sirens blaring, a truckful of armed men trailing in its wake, the black sport utility vehicle that sliced sharklike through the Syrian town of Ashrafieh Sahnaya on Friday morning was impossible to miss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Government forces had retaken control from the armed groups that turned the town into a sectarian battlefield for two days this week, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/01\/world\/middleeast\/syria-sectarian-violence-100-killed.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">killing dozens<\/a> and exposing for all to see the new Syrian leaders\u2019 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/01\/world\/middleeast\/syria-sectarian-attack-druse.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">shaky grip<\/a> on security. Now, government representatives had arrived to pledge peace to a skeptical town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an airy, echoing religious meeting hall, two officials in suits sat shoulder to shoulder with white-bearded leaders of the Druse religious minority in traditional red-topped white hats, talking of unity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re all in one ship,\u201d said Jameel Mudawwar, the area\u2019s top official. \u201cIf it sinks, God forbid, we\u2019ll all sink.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The words were not new, but this time they came with action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Syria\u2019s main Druse militias, who control a strategic swath of southern Syria near Israel, have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/01\/world\/middleeast\/syria-israel-border.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">resisted a push<\/a> by the new Islamist government to be folded into the national military, fearing that acceding would endanger their people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But as the bloodshed mounted this week, local Druse leaders in Ashrafieh Sahnaya went the other way. In exchange for government concessions, including promises to investigate abuses committed during the clashes, they agreed to surrender their weapons and integrate some fighters into the government\u2019s forces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe should love each other, and we should all stand with each other,\u201d the town\u2019s 86-year-old chief Druse religious leader, Sheikh Abu Rabih Haj Ali, said at Friday\u2019s meeting. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to carry weapons. We don\u2019t want to be against the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was what the government had hoped to hear for months now, after rebels from Syria\u2019s Sunni Muslim majority overthrew the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad in December. But many Syrians from the country\u2019s many religious and ethnic minorities remain wary of their new leaders amid repeated <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/20\/world\/middleeast\/syria-alawite-massacre.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">spasms of violence targeting minorities<\/a>, including the Druse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This week, a debunked audio clip purporting to be of a Druse cleric insulting the Prophet Muhammad incited Sunni extremists to attack Druse, including in Ashrafieh Sahnaya, south of Damascus, the capital. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/01\/world\/middleeast\/syria-sectarian-violence-100-killed.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">At least 101 people were killed<\/a>, including government forces, Druse fighters and civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Ashrafieh Sahnaya, where different sects have long coexisted peacefully, mortars and shells crashed into buildings. Drones struck from the sky, and residents cowered indoors as local Druse militia fighters battled government forces and armed Sunni extremists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The rebel coalition that toppled Mr. al-Assad included some Islamist extremist factions that remain outside central control, and that the Syrian authorities have shown little capacity to rein in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israel, whose government is close to the Israeli Druse minority, then intervened in the name of protecting Syrian Druse, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/30\/world\/middleeast\/syria-sectarian-fighting-druse.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">launching airstrikes<\/a> on Syrian government targets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There are more than one million Druse across the Middle East, mostly in Syria and Lebanon, and some in Jordan and Israel. They practice a secretive offshoot of Islam.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By Friday, the bloodshed still seemed more raw wound than memory for many.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One man at Friday\u2019s meeting demanded government reassurances about security and safety. Dispensing with the conciliatory tone of the others present, he accused pro-government forces of slaughtering civilians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The officials at the meeting pleaded for patience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe are promising you a better life,\u201d said Mr. Mudawwar, the government official. \u201cWhat happens to you will happen to us. It\u2019s the government\u2019s duty to protect everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some listeners bought it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Saleh Makiki, Mr. Haj Ali\u2019s nephew, said he had lost five relatives this week, including his father, a son and an uncle. Yet he said he was willing to move forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMistakes happened, but we have assurances now,\u201d he said. The government later released 32 local men detained during the clashes, satisfying a key Druse demand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Outside the meeting hall, however, opinions were divided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Across the street, Bahira Haj Ali, 42, leaned out her window to watch the sheikh, a relative, departing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s good we had the men to resist,\u201d she said of the local Druse militias. \u201cYou can\u2019t imagine the sounds we heard \u2014 shells, drones.\u201d It was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/01\/world\/middleeast\/syria-sectarian-attack-druse.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hard to trust<\/a> government forces, she said, though, she added, she might feel different if men from Ashrafieh Sahnaya joined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As for Druse militias\u2019 weapons, Ms. Haj Ali said: \u201cThis is our security. It shouldn\u2019t be given up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In town, there was disagreement over how the violence had begun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some Sunnis said that Druse militants had attacked government checkpoints after extremists attacked a nearby town, while some Druse said that Sunni extremists had struck first.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Around the town square, broken glass and bullet casings littered the ground.
