{"id":48573,"date":"2025-05-05T11:20:37","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T15:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/survivors-urge-cardinals-to-discuss-sex-abuse-crisis-in-choosing-next-pope\/05\/05\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T11:20:37","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T15:20:37","slug":"survivors-urge-cardinals-to-discuss-sex-abuse-crisis-in-choosing-next-pope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/survivors-urge-cardinals-to-discuss-sex-abuse-crisis-in-choosing-next-pope\/05\/05\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Survivors Urge Cardinals to Discuss Sex Abuse Crisis in Choosing Next Pope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cardinals are not the only ones who have arrived in Rome for the conclave to pick Pope Francis\u2019 successor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since Francis\u2019 death last month, survivors of sexual abuse and those who monitor the Roman Catholic Church\u2019s handling of abuse cases have also arrived, hoping to persuade cardinals to make the issue a priority when considering who should next be pope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think it\u2019s very important to remind them that we will not go away,\u201d said Matthias Katsch, a Berlin-based board member of Ending Clergy Abuse, an advocacy group that represents survivors from 20 countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Matteo Bruni, the Vatican spokesman, said on Friday that during pre-conclave meetings this past week the cardinals had discussed sexual abuse in the church, and considered it a \u201cwound to be kept open\u201d so that awareness of the problem remained alive and concrete paths for healing can be identified.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Francis was elected in 2013, he inherited a church profoundly unsettled by the clerical sex abuse crisis, which had damaged its reputation and in some places was depleting its pews. Twelve years later, critics describe his legacy on the issue as mixed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Francis is credited with taking some steps that were decidedly stronger than those of his two predecessors, who caught the first wave of outrage when the clergy abuse scandal exploded. But Francis stumbled, too, and clerical abuse remains a ruinous issue that his successor will inherit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Francis <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/24\/world\/europe\/pope-vatican-sexual-abuse.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">summoned the world\u2019s bishops to the Vatican in 2019<\/a> for an unprecedented meeting that sought to make the protection of children a global priority, it was a sign that the Vatican was finally treating clerical sexual abuse as a global crisis rather than the failing of any particular country or culture. He also met face-to-face with survivors on many of his international trips to signal that the church was aware of their pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He issued and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/25\/world\/europe\/pope-francis-sexual-abuse-minors.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">then broadened<\/a> the church\u2019s most comprehensive law to confront the crisis to hold clerics, from seminarians to cardinals, accountable if they sexually abused children, minors or vulnerable adults, or covered up abuse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">However, he disappointed many abuse survivors and their advocates by not requiring that cases be reported to the civil authorities or made public. Full transparency is essential if the church is going to be taken seriously in its actions, they say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Accounts of clerical abuse and cover-ups continue to emerge \u2014 from individual cases to as many as hundreds listed in reports commissioned by national bishops\u2019 conferences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Critics say that the main obstacles to eradicating the scourge are inside the church itself, both at a local level and within the Vatican hierarchy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIn many countries in the non-Western world, abuse is still looked on as the Western problem,\u201d said Marie Collins, a former member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, which Francis <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/06\/world\/europe\/pope-setting-up-commission-on-clerical-child-abuse.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">set up in 2013<\/a> to advise him on the issue of clerical sex abuse. At the time, the creation of such a group was seen as a forceful sign that Francis was aware of the impact of the abuse crisis on the faithful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Ms. Collins, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/faith\/2019\/03\/19\/deliver-us-podcast-survivor-collins-233455\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an Irish survivor of sexual abuse,<\/a> recalled how the commission faced roadblocks. It was underfunded and understaffed, she said, and Vatican officials were reluctant to interact with commission members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere are very strong forces in the church, not just in the Vatican, that are still of the traditional view that can\u2019t confront this issue because it destroys the reputation of the church,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s clericalism at its worst,\u201d she added, referring to the dynamic \u2014 often denounced by Francis \u2014 of clergy regarding themselves as superior to and isolated from their flock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Collins <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/01\/world\/europe\/vatican-abuse-panel-marie-collins.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">quit the commission in 2017,<\/a> citing \u201ccultural resistance\u201d from the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Rev. Hans Zollner, a German Jesuit who is an expert on the church\u2019s anti-abuse efforts, said in a telephone interview that the church had \u201ccome a long way\u201d under Francis in dealing with the sexual abuse of children, through new guidelines and \u201cchanges and integration into general canon law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the church has not uniformly embraced the changes, and the rules are \u201capplied in some places, but not in all,\u201d said Father Zollner, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/13\/world\/europe\/vatican-sex-abuse-rome.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">quit the commission in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cardinals meeting before the conclave begins should also be aware of and \u201caddress possible concerns when it comes to candidates\u201d for the papacy, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Survivors\u2019 groups say that in the pre-conclave meetings, the cardinals should be blunt and demand a yes-or-no answer to the question \u201cWill you enact a true universal zero-tolerance law?\u201d \u2014 the \u201cone strike and you\u2019re out\u201d policy that advocacy groups demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, a group known as SNAP, says that the cardinals should also be aware of how each papal candidate has dealt with abuse allegations. Last month, the organization launched <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conclavewatch.org\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Conclave Watch,<\/a> a project that scrutinizes how some cardinals handled abuse cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The organization has assembled dossiers calling for the Vatican to investigate the records of 20 cardinals, including some frequently cited papal contenders. The list also includes cardinals who are not widely regarded as candidates, but whose handling of abuse cases has received media attention, especially in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"> Any cardinal who \u201cmismanaged or covered up for sex crimes, he shouldn\u2019t be the pope,\u201d Peter Isely, a SNAP leader from Milwaukee, told a news conference in Rome on Wednesday. \u201cThis seems like reasonable and relevant criteria that should be the priority\u201d for voting cardinals, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">None of the cardinals who have been publicly accused of mishandling cases have spoken to representatives of the survivors groups to address the allegations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Anne Barrett Doyle, co-director of BishopAccountability.org, an archive and advocacy group, said the church\u2019s reassurances that it is paying attention to the issue had been \u201cseriously undermined\u201d by the presence at the cardinals meetings of a Peruvian cardinal, Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, on whom <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/peru-vatican-cipriani-abuse-opus-dei-f06a78f69d34e4a518361b8f3dc60527\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Francis had imposed sanctions in 2019<\/a> after an accusation of sexual abuse \u2014 which the cardinal has denied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt sent a terrible message,\u201d said Ms. Barrett Doyle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Vatican has declined to respond to questions about whether the cardinal should have been present at the meeting. At 81, he is not eligible to vote in the conclave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIs abuse taken seriously?\u201d asked Ms. Barrett Doyle. \u201cI just can\u2019t tell.
