This cut from the 1992 \u201cWatery, Domestic\u201d EP \u2014 four top-tier Pavement songs, no skips \u2014 is punctuated by stinging lead guitar and provides the documentary with its opening disclaimer: \u201cThe stories you hear, you know they never add up.\u201d<\/p>\n \u25b6 Listen on <\/strong>Spotify<\/a>, Apple Music<\/a> or YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n Or is it \u201cSilence Kit\u201d? Depends which part of the album art you look at; Pavement never liked to be pinned down. From the opening notes of this track, it became clear that the \u201cCrooked Rain, Crooked Rain\u201d LP was on a different wavelength from \u201cSlanted,\u201d putting a lot more classic rock into the mix. The vocal melody seems partially cribbed from \u201cEveryday<\/a>\u201d by Buddy Holly \u2014 a far cry from the Fall.<\/p>\n \u25b6 Listen on <\/strong>Spotify<\/a>, Apple Music<\/a> or YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n Pavement had one of its biggest alt-rock hits with \u201cCut Your Hair,\u201d full of crunchy guitars and catchy \u201cooh, ooh, oohs.\u201d It\u2019s very Malkmus to write a song that could actually get played on MTV<\/a> and end it by singing \u201ccareer\u201d over and over until the syllables are drained of meaning.<\/p>\n \u25b6 Listen on <\/strong>Spotify<\/a>, Apple Music<\/a> or YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n Pavement sometimes went in a more jangle-pop direction \u2014 clean guitars, shiny melodies. (They love<\/a> R.E.M.<\/a>) \u201cGold Soundz\u201d is jangle-Pavement at its best, with some of Malkmus\u2019s least cryptic sentiments: \u201cSo drunk in the August sun and you\u2019re the kind of girl I like.\u201d<\/p>\n \u25b6 Listen on <\/strong>Spotify<\/a>, Apple Music<\/a> or YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cWowee Zowee,\u201d from 1995, might be the group\u2019s most divisive LP. To its champions, the 18-track, three-sided record (the fourth was left blank) is an indie-rock \u201cWhite Album,\u201d while its detractors find it wildly uneven. The high points, though, are undeniably high, like \u201cGrounded,\u201d with its chiming intro and a chorus that can give chills.<\/p>\n \u25b6 Listen on <\/strong>Spotify<\/a>, Apple Music<\/a> or YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n The two singles from \u201cWowee,\u201d \u201cRattled by the Rush<\/a>\u201d and \u201cFather to a Sister of Thought<\/a>,\u201d were both slower songs that didn\u2019t really catch on, although Malkmus says in \u201cPavements\u201d that he wasn\u2019t being intentionally perverse and believed they were hits. (\u201cI think I was smoking a lot of grass at the time,\u201d he explains.) Maybe they should have gone with this bouncier number, with absurd lyrics (\u201cMy heart is made of gravy\u201d) that include what I\u2019m assuming is rock\u2019s only shout-out to the Javits Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n4. \u201cFrontwards\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n
