Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts at the start of his second term, President Trump has repeatedly lamented the building\u2019s condition. He has described the center, which opened in 1971, as in \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/arts\/music\/trump-kennedy-center.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tremendous disrepair<\/a>,\u201d and has spoken about the need for a major renovation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now Republican lawmakers appear to be heeding his call. A House committee approved a budget proposal last week that called for allocating $257 million to the Kennedy Center for capital repairs and other expenses, roughly six times the amount it usually receives from the government. It is a piece of the large reconciliation measure, which Mr. Trump calls his \u201cone big beautiful bill,\u201d that Republicans are writing and hope to push through Congress in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which has jurisdiction over federal buildings, said in a statement Tuesday that the \u201ccomponent of the proposal that provides funding for repairs and maintenance needs at the Kennedy Center was requested by the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The White House declined to discuss the specifics of the proposal, which is still working its way through the House as the reconciliation package takes shape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPresident Trump cares deeply about American arts and culture, which is why he is revitalizing historic institutions like the Kennedy Center to their former greatness,\u201d Anna Kelly, a White House spokeswoman, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Kennedy Center declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The center <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/19\/arts\/trump-kennedy-center-finances.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">typically gets about $43 million in federal funds<\/a>, which goes toward operations, maintenance and repairs of the property. That is roughly 16 percent of its $268 million annual budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some Democrats have expressed concern about the committee\u2019s proposal, which comes as Mr. Trump is making sweeping cuts to the arts, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/02\/arts\/nea.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">proposing the elimination<\/a> of the National Endowment for the Arts and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/03\/arts\/national-endowment-for-the-arts-grants.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">canceling current grant offers<\/a> to cultural organizations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Representative Chellie Pingree of Maine, the top Democrat on the House subcommittee overseeing the arts endowment, described the increase in spending on the Kennedy Center as \u201cexorbitant.\u201d She sent a letter on Tuesday to Richard Grenell, whom Mr. Trump made president of the Kennedy Center, demanding a \u201cdetailed account of how the Kennedy Center intends to use this funding, should it be approved by Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement, Ms. Pingree said: \u201cWhile I appreciate President Trump\u2019s interest in the center\u2019s future and the dire need for funding, we must ensure that funds appropriated by Congress are truly benefiting the artists and audiences that make the Kennedy Center great. We need transparency on how this money would be spent and assurance it\u2019s not being used to reward loyalty or bankroll pet projects under the guise of cultural investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The office of Representative Sam Graves of Missouri, the top Republican on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The money for the Kennedy Center is included in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/transportation.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/ans_to_ti_committee_print_reconciliation.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 22-page bill<\/a> approved by the committee last week. The proposal includes about $242 million for \u201cnecessary expenses for capital repair and restoration of the building and site,\u201d along with $7.7 million for \u201coperation, maintenance and security\u201d and $7.2 million for \u201cadministrative expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/12\/arts\/music\/trump-kennedy-center-chairman.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">made himself chairman<\/a> of the Kennedy Center in February after purging its historically bipartisan board of Biden appointees, has repeatedly criticized the center\u2019s facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/17\/arts\/music\/trump-kennedy-center-visit.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">When the president visited the center<\/a> in March to preside over a board meeting, he disparaged its appearance. (Its architecture has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1971\/09\/07\/archives\/architecture-a-look-at-the-kennedy-center-architecture-a-kennedy.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">drawn criticism from the start.<\/a>) He took issue with the center\u2019s 2019 expansion, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/01\/arts\/music\/deborah-rutter-kennedy-center.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cost $250 million that was raised privately<\/a>, saying that \u201cthey built these rooms that nobody\u2019s going to use.\u201d And he said that the center\u2019s signature columns should be covered with marble or granite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey never covered the I-beam,\u201d he said, according to a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/17\/arts\/music\/trump-kennedy-center-visit.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recording of the board meeting that was obtained by The New York Times<\/a>. He added: \u201cI think the I-beams should be covered with some incredible stone \u2014 probably marble, but marble\u2019s a bad outdoor stone, but looks better than granite. But it should be covered. And we\u2019ll do that. We\u2019ll add that in. But it\u2019s not a small job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump also promised at the meeting to seek money for the Kennedy Center from Congress to help \u201cbring it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Grenell and his team at the Kennedy Center have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/21\/arts\/music\/richard-grenell-kennedy-center-trump.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">set out to remake the institution<\/a>. They have sought to cut costs and reduce staff; <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/18\/arts\/music\/kennedy-center-firings.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">roughly 40 staff members have been dismissed<\/a> since Mr. Trump\u2019s takeover. And they have promised changes in programming, though they have not yet offered a detailed vision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The president is expected to attend a fund-raiser and performance of \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d at the Kennedy Center in June.
