The dedicated few were largely collaborators and colleagues, many of whom met a generation ago at the landmark Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, N.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Giddens, the folk musician and recipient of all the accolades (Grammys, a Pulitzer, a MacArthur), no longer knows everyone who followed her path. That expansion, she figured, was reason to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She did so the last weekend of April at her inaugural Biscuits &amp; Banjos Festival in Durham, N.C., a jamboree featuring twangy banjos, groovy basses, clickety bones and, yes, the devouring of many flaky, buttery biscuits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The festival culminated in a reunion by the Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Black string band led by Giddens, Dom Flemons and Justin Robinson. The group met at the Boone gathering, taking apprenticeship under the old-time fiddle player Joe Thompson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Grammy-winning band resuscitated styles like Piedmont string music, presenting them to a broader audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was just time to come back together and to say, \u2018Hey, we did a thing,\u2019\u201d Giddens said. \u201cLet\u2019s celebrate being a part of a chain, because when we came out, there was a lot of weight on us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She added: \u201cNow we\u2019re a link in the chain. We\u2019re not the end of the chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The idea for the festival\u2019s titular pairing came during the pandemic. Giddens was locked down at home in Ireland, where she has lived since 2018. She did not have easy access to comfort food like when she made her routine trips back to the United States. She studied cooking, watching series like \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81034518\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">High on the Hog<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat was so instrumental in breaking open the idea of what soul food is and what Southern food is, and how integral the African American experience is to it,\u201d Giddens said. \u201cIt felt very similar to the work that I was doing with the banjo and country music and old-time music \u2014 this idea of culture being expressed through something that people do every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several local restaurants submitted entries for the festival\u2019s golden biscuit award. Melanie Wilkerson, the executive chef at the Counting House Restaurant, won with her \u201cangel\u201d biscuit, consisting of a yeast and brioche base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She learned how to make them from her grandmother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBiscuits are understated, but understood depending on where you come from,\u201d said Wilkerson, a Durham native.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The festival\u2019s lineup was cross-generational. The influential blues singer Taj Mahal, an octogenarian, performed with Leyla McCalla, a former cellist for the Chocolate Drops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s nice to see the children of blues,\u201d Mahal said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s nice to be called a child still,\u201d answered McCalla, who\u2019s 39.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen you get to be this age, 65 or 70 is a child,\u201d Mahal retorted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The bassist Christian McBride performed with the North Carolina Central University Jazz Ensemble 1.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cFor the lineup to be so melanated, it feels groundbreaking,\u201d said Lillian Werbin, the co-owner of Lansing\u2019s Elderly Instruments, who traveled to Durham with her staff and about 20 banjos for sale. \u201cShe\u2019s saying that she\u2019s the middle of the link, but this is a starting point. This is like the beginning of what could be even bigger and more established and it can go for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019ve never seen that many Black people on the stage together playing this music, and it\u2019s just really exciting to see this music, the resurgence, the renewal, the rebirth of it,\u201d said Dr. Angela M. Wellman, the founder of the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music in California, after she finished watching the reunion concert.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Giddens has gone on to other projects post-Chocolate Drops. In just the past year or so, she was featured on Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s \u201cTexas Hold \u2019Em,\u201d the lead single from \u201cCowboy Carter,\u201d and on the soundtrack to Ryan Coogler\u2019s movie \u201cSinners.\u201d She recently <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/kennedy-center-cancel-shows-resignations.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">moved<\/a> her show away from the Kennedy Center in May because of the new administration\u2019s upheaval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI feel like the most important thing to get out of that is that we need to support each other as long as you think about what you\u2019re doing and you have an intentionality,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Giddens was omnipresent throughout the weekend. She was a judge in the biscuit competition. She played banjo during a Friday night square dance, packed with people with wide smiles, before hopping off the stage, barefoot, to participate in the line dance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is the idea of cultural renaissance,\u201d Giddens said. \u201cThis is cultural excavation. It just happens some people are doing it with music. Some people with food. Some people are doing it in literature.
